Hi,

What will happen when black fqhh gets exposed to strong sunlight and the heat from it for quite some time? Can this be seen as part of breaking it in or will it really do some damage? Any pics from jackets which have a serious sunlight history?

Uhhh, like how long do you plan to expose the leather to the sun? Is "I wore the jacket for five summers" a serious sunlight history? I don't understand at all where you are going with this. The sun's radiation will certainly damage anything over a certain period of time, in case of leather probably after 10 or 20 decades? First thing to notice would probably be color loss or brittleness after a few years left untreated.. I don't see how lieing a jacket in the sun for a few days will do anything to it, neither damage nor break in.

Down here if you left any leather jacket in the back window of your car for a couple of years it would dry out, fade and shrivel.

But with normal wear, with some extended hours on a bike, say, sunlight might gradually help fade a jacket over years but will do it little harm.

warmth or the visible light of the sun don't do much, the UV radiation of the sun if you live in equatorial at high elevation is the one that bleaches your stuff. there is anti UV in some leather conditioner product if you want to keep its color longer.

I have a black School with significant sun exposure on the motorcycle. It is bleached a dark grey and is a little bit dry. I could treat it, but that would remove the patina. It is the second most "salty" jacket in my MC club, and I don't want to go back to the end of the line and start over.

My LHB ( brown CXL FQHH) is 13 or 14 years old this year ( I think) ... it's shearling lined and gets worn every winter quite extensively ... I noticed after about 10 years that the colour of the leather under the collar ( it has a rust mouton collar) is noticeably darker than the colour of the shoulders ... wether that's through wear or bleaching I have no idea, however, it is something which is quite noticeable in vintage jackets .. I really like it and how it's wearing :)

I haven't noticed similar lightening on black jackets of similar vintage TBH.

Bought my son a NOS Avirex HH A-2 a couple years back. It had been in a store window for what looked like a year. The sun did fade parts of it, but not enough to not make the price worthwhile. But, browns surely fade...
My old Hein Gerrick Moto black steer got barely faded on the shoulders and I rode a lot here in SoCal sun for years...
