Sunday best?

I couldn't imagine attending a Tridentine Mass in jeans. I'd feel so shabby and conspicuous.

That makes me wonder if my wife feels uncomfortable sans mantilla... I hope not.

...Do you pull out all the stops and actually go for a Sunday best (or Friday or Saturday, depending on your persuasion) outfit? Or do you just wear what you'd wear during the week, since you're already more "dressed up" than the majority of the population anyway?

I dress in 2 or 3 piece suits with tie everyday. Therefore, I wear the same to church each week. However I have noticed, even over the last 5 years, a substantial "dressing-down" at church. I am one of the few remaining parishners that, consistently, wears a suit and tie and I will 'till death. Having said that, I am just happy people are there.

I wear suits mostly, since, being a lawyer, you are expected to look a certain way. Now, I might wear a sportscoat in the summer, especially if I am just entering an order, or appearing quickly, but for real hearings, a suit. So, I grab suits for church. Our church is starting a later, more contemporary service on Sundays in a few weeks, and while I would prefer the music, it will basically be the first service but the preacher may lose the tie, or may change to a sportscoat. I just feel I want to give God my best and since I wear suits most days of the week, why not just pull it out on Sunday. But then again, Jesus went to the people and met them at their need, so if someone comes in shorts and wants or needs to hear the Gospel, God bless him and come in shorts!!!

I was in an orthodox Jewish neighborhood this AM, and saw whole families walking to-and-from temple...all the men had dark suits and white shirts on, the girls and women in sundresses or more formal dresses, it was nice to see.

At my church there is, for the most part, a divide by generation, the grey hairs wearing (for the most part) suits and dresses (and several of the ladies' hats are marvellous!), with decreasing levels of formality as parishoners get younger. I wear a suit (or even full uniform for certain occasions) for the most part, but am guilty of lesser dress myself.

As an atheist, I dress up for myself, everyday, which makes some sort of sense I guess.

Though I have to admit it was a bit sad, when at the last funeral I attended, I was the only person who dressed strictly in black and somewhat formal, and this is counting plenty of elderly people [huh] I don't want to judge people based in their appearance alone, but I was a bit surprised.
I guess we just can't count on clothes as an expression of respect anymore. We will have to find this elsewhere.

I dress nicely for church, always have. Hosiery with a dress, and proper undergarments-always. I may well be one of the few ladies that still wear a slip. Dress, or skirt or trousers with nice blouse or sweater. Makeup. I feel dressing nicely is appropriate and respectful in a house of worship. The vintage clothes, furs and hats are lovely for wearing to church. They always elicit comments about how nice the look is for church, like people use to dress...

My husband has always dressed in a sport coat and tie ensemble for church if not a suit, his parents had him in suits for church as a kid.

It's a little ironic that I grew up going to church (well, being taken by my grandmother until I was 16 and chose not to go so much), while my husband's family wasn't really religious; his church memories of are of watching Sinbad movies in the Unitarian church in his Welsh town.
Now, I see a client every Sunday morning, and the Mr. has decided in recent years, to attend a neighborhood Presbyterian church. So when we both meet up at home for the ritual of going out to brunch, I choose to take off my massage-giving clothes and change into something more Sunday-ish. It's nice to match his nice trousers-and-tie look, which is how he goes to church.

Let me add that due to my childhood experience, church means wearing a dress or skirt to me. I know times have changed, and many churches have gone hip, mainstream, casual, whatever, but I would feel so odd attending a service in 'everyday' clothes. (Although many 'every days' for me are vintage-esque girly complete with cincher and stockings.)
