Summertime and the living is vintage

I was perusing the college wear thread and it seemed that most of the items listed were geared towards a New England aesthetic. This isn't surprising, since New England (and New York) was the cultural center of America up until mid century. Lots of sweaters, tweeds, etc.

I happen to be in San Diego and tweeds and sweaters are comfortable December - February. It's already getting to temperatures (and more so, solar radiation) that leave a simple shirt damp and clinging to the skin after a mile or so walk to school.

What sort of hot weather clothing was worn to school in these times?

I'm in the same boat, perhaps more so. I live in Tennessee, and it's not uncommon for us to be well into the 90s in mid-May, with 60+% humidity. And August makes that look like child's play. Going outside in a Tshirt and shorts is uncomfortable, let alone wearing a suit or even a linen jacket. Add to that the fact that I don't own a car and bicycle everywhere, and that leaves me with almost no opportunities to wear dressier clothing (of course that last part is my own choice).
