Suede Type 3 custom made?

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a suede type 3 trucker jacket with sheep lining

I've found a few places that make leather type 3 jackets but I'm wanting to add some stuff to the jacket.

western yokes front and back and have the pockets more asymmetrical and "saw toothish" with the chest stitching slanted.

solid hardware snaps and leather lined hand pockets.

Basically I'm trying to commission a pimped out western type 3 trucker jacket in khaki/whisky suede.

Anyone know the best company that will make something like this?

So far I've checked to see if The Flat Head would make their type 3 in suede since the pattern is pretty close to what I'd like but they wont make custom leather jackets.

I talked with Thurston Bros via email and they said my proposal had too many alterations to the pattern for a single jacket order from Aero.

Should I contact Aero directly or look elsewhere?

How about simplify. I'd listen to what they said. Too much is not good for the maker. Too many ways it could go wrong. My 2¢

Fair enough.

I am however looking for bespoke and am expecting to pay for the service of a pattern being altered.

I would recommend Johnson Leathers out of San Francisco. They offer a stock type-iii on their website but pay no attention to their website-instead, check out the examples of their custom work posted here. If you can get in their shop in person you can go full bespoke, but Alan from Johnson will create just about anything out of thin air. Like Thurston, he will provide a similar model for you to try on at a surcharge, and will tweak the test jacket accordingly but more liberally than most. You may be in luck given a generic Type III is one of their stock jackets.

You can also ping Simmons Bilt of Scotland as they may be more open to customization, but I have no experience with them.

Perhaps Wested out of the UK. No experience either. The forum has examples of all three makers. Welcome.

In the US I'd second the vote for Johnsons .... great work and very approachable re. customization. I think the jacket sounds cool .. very similar to the Levis Big E suede Western jacket ( sherpa lined) of the 60's.

Stu at Lost Worlds does and "Rancher" and a "Jeans Jacket" ( very type 3 esque ) ..... sounds like you're looking for a hybrid of these two ..... again he may be open for a custom project but it won't be cheap ... it WILL be awesome though :)

In the UK I'd go SB ... again because of their attitude to this level customization. I had a Type 3 patterned waistcoat from them 18 months ago ( from their sale pages) and they did a great job in customizing it for me .. even though it was a sale item ( It was for "patching" and wearing over my Aero Patrolmans jacket ... didn't want to patch the patrolman jacket directly ! ) I've ended up using a Filsons vest as the leather on leather was too heavy for my liking ( and a bit too "leather on leather" also if you know what I mean :) ).

Someone posted pics here a while back of a custom Johnson theyd ordered (not a type 3) and the fit was astonishing.

IIRC they also mentioned a wonderful experience all along.

Good luck, sounds cool.

This is basically what I'm looking for but with a western yoke on the back and asymmetrical front pockets with sawtooth flaps.
