Mystery solved!

This actor with Loretta Young had me stumped, and for good reason. Robert (Bobby) Williams died of appendicitis in 1931, just after making this picture, Platinum Blonde, with Frank Capra. He apparently made quite an impression as a charismatic newspaperman.

I was about to give up on this one until I decided I'd rightclick on the pic and noticed "platinumblonde" in the file name. I IMDb'd it and bang! there was everything.

Style note: Williams' suit jacket fits him very close to the chest, as was the fashion before the English drape cut caught on in NY circa 1934, and in California a year or so later.

Here's a early 30s hat I bought recently:

Looks like it was originally bashed with a c-crown?
Appears that way from the side view.

As I recall, Douglas recently had Art make him a hat
with a dimensional brim.

Nice find Henrik.

Henrik -- If that hat truly dates to the early 30's (and it certainly looks like it might), then it may well establish that dimensional brims have been around for a lot longer than some might think. Maybe Indy's fedora isn't so period inauthentic after all! ;)

Cheers,
Jimmy

An interesting thing about this hat is that the side are pretty short compared to the wide front and back of the brim!

Henrik

That IS a marvelous hat. I wish i had a hat like that. High crown and all..
Did you buy it on ebay or did you try it on irl?

@Fletch: I know it 's called dimensional cut/brim, I just wanted clarify that the one on this hat is extreme dimensional.

I'm also more after a Aviator/Adventurer-look than wanting to look like a German countryboy though that's simply what I am.
And then again I really like "Oh Brother where art, thou?";)

Seriously I'm going make casual vintage-style ties, based on the shape of 1930s wool plaid tie, on my own.

@feltfan: Not really, I got it bashed with some kind of a center dent and though I prefer that style I tried a c-crown and wasn't satisfied. The felt is so soft that the crease is still visible.

@Mr. Rover: You're right! I like it when girls have their own style, but I can't understand why you see so few girls wearing skirts and dresses!?[huh]

Henrik

Film By Borsalino at JJ hat Center

I tried this hat on when I was there- closest thing you'll find to vintage. Crown was pretty straight and square with a Bogey style shorter medium sized brim. I liked it, but for $275....my size 7 noggin can find better vintage hats.

You can say that again. That hat size could net you about 8 hats for the price. :D ;)

J

And the felt is that familiar modern spongey Borsalino stuff, too. I was at the Borsalino booth at a menswear trade show last year (where I met Besdor from Bencraft Hats) and I was very disappointed by how the felt seems to just fuzz up your hand when you rub it.

All is good in the world, though- I just picked up these two on eBay:
