subdued patch on vietnam jackets

I saw that the subdued patch are officially started in 1970, but from pictures it seems that soldiers at the time were using these patch before. Any ideas when the subdued ssi have started to be used? And specifically when they started for the 1st of cavalry?

Subdued divisional insignia were authorized in theatre as of 1966, but were not that common until 1967. But as for 1st Cav and other "proud" line units like 101st AB, they still sometimes tended to use the full color patches.

When I was there in the 101st in '71, I was told we were Westmoreland's pet division and we only wore full color Screaming Eagles.......
