Style Hits of 1941 - Catalog Illustrations

This catalog has come my way. Some of the best stuff I've seen. Note the drape suits, and some of the extremely pinched waists and WIDE shoulders.

Notice also that the jacket sleeves have a crease pressed in. You can see it in the first illustration, along with high armholes. What I like about these illustrations is that so many of the things we have discussed are shown in spades.

Your catalog shows that the golden era offered MUCH more variety than many give it credit for. Take a look ...



A double-breasted suit jacket with 6 buttons -- and it buttons ONLY at the bottom buttonhole:

Or ... a DB jacket with 6 buttons that buttons all the way up to the top button:

And yes, even as late as 1941 you could still get a double-breasted frock coat:

Oh yeah,...and the suits are cool too. But aren't the illustrations a bit exagerated? I mean the guys look pretty small inside those really big suits in the second illustration. A suit like that would need careful adjustments to get it just right. Or was it really this way? Sort of a precurser to the zoot suit?

Forgot to mention, these suits are actually a decent representation of a 40s drape suit. I have a Hickey Freeman Londonaire that looks nearly identical to the middle double breasted model above. The shoulders don't look quite that wide but they stick out there.

Often these faces were blends of several actors. I see Lionel Barrymore mixed with Warren Baxter (of 42nd Street).

i know that in illustrations they would deliberately exaggerate the features of a garment to get the point across to the reader, but WOW those shoulders !
