Stratoliner Box & Brim Curl

Man, you got some good eyes, RBH. I certainly can't make out how many engines there are on that pin.

I still can't believe that they'd go to all the trouble of marketing a hat as a Stratoliner, get TWA on board etc., put a Stratoliner on the box, put a Stratoliner on the liner, put a Stratoliner on some sweatbands, put a Stratoliner as the backdrop to the ads . . . and then put a DC-3 (or whatever) pin on the hat - i.e. not a Stratoliner! It doesn't make any sense. Unfortunately all the pins in the pics are pretty blurry because they're so small. I'm remain unconvinced because the evidence is shaky. Just because the pins exist doesn't mean they were meant for hat-wear.

No way would Stetson do anything like that! Just take a look at their Indiana Jones fedora... looks just like the one used in the film.

While we're at it, RBH, here's a 1940 newspaper ad that you posted in the "Dating Vintage Stetsons by Price" thread. It definitely ties the "streamlined" box and the hat pin to 1940. I tend to think that both features -- the box and the pin -- were tied to the rollout of the Stratoliner, but that neither one lasted for very long after that.

Incidentally, if you look very closely, it appears that the pin in the newspaper ad is flying forward, as well...

I agree J... I think most hat wearers just knew it was a plane... nothing else.
I never looked at how many engines weer on the plane.. just the direction it was going.

original poster framed in my hallway. Maybe if I know
where that came from, I can get a better idea of the
date of the poster. You can't really see the tie in that
small picture, but it's wild enough to date the poster to
the 1940s by itself.

I can take a picture of the pin (which, in my
poster is quite large, and therefore I assume detailed)
if people are interested.

Oh, BTW, I happen to have a couple of Strats and a couple of Strat boxes. But the hats do not reside in the boxes because I'd rather not subject them to such tight quarters. Instead, I keep a couple of funky old beaters in those boxes, hats I expect I'll take apart and try to make something good of one of these days.

The Stratoliner box was something less than an overwhelming success as a functional hat box, I suppose. But it's such a cool artifact. It really speaks of its period. Mine routinely provoke favorable commentary. And there's no shortage of vintage hat boxes on display around here to offer competition.

Well... I didn't look at the poster when I offered to
take the picture. The original poster is, of course,
an airbrush painting, not a photograph. So while
the pin is around life size, it is a few textured blobs
of airbrush paint. Not a lot to go on, in counting engines.

Sorry about that. I'll post the entire poster one of
these days. It's a classic. Mine is not, of course, the
original airbrush painting. But it is a nice old print with
those rich colored inks they aren't allowed to use anymore...

GWD... I truly do not know. I do know the pins in the ads are flying forward.
But the pin I have on my Straoliner is just like the pin in your photo, only it does not have TWA written on it.
I do have a TWA service pin just like the one in the photo. had in on my Campdraft for awhile, but now have a FFA pin on that hat.

I say the same!!!! Altough I have thought the ones with TWA were a service pin and the ones with no printing were the ones on the hat. The two pins are the same except for the printing.
