The hat looks fine..... but is it still a Stratoliner? What if you took a Whippet , cut the brim edge off and slapped on a thin ribbon? Would it still be a Whippet?

I think that taking elements off or modifying the things that make it a Whippet (bound, wide brim, etc.) would make it something else other than a Whippet.

That's what I'm wondering Jim. I tend to like my old hats and my old cars stock.
That Impala still retains enough of the original visual cues that make an Impala an Impala. I don't think I would have guessed that the OP's Strat was a Strat.

I threw a bid on this as I was literally falling asleep. I woke up in the morning thinking "what? I bought something in my sleep?"

In any event, this was waiting for me when I got home and rather than post in "new hats", this seemed a more appropriate thread.

It is sage green with a little over 5" open crown, just under 2" rust coloured ribbon and a 2-1/8 brim and 2" on the sides so dimensional. 7-1/8 long oval and fits me well to my surprise.

Having admired the beautiful Strats with *thin* ribbons, it is contradictory to the "Stratoliner" on the sweat so looks like it has been tinkered with but the ribbon is not new. The lining is attached by glued paper which I have not seen before (but I am still a novice).

The felt is a little firm but it seems like it has not been worn in a while.

As I was trying to work it out out of the box, my daughter wanders up and says "oh, did you trim the brim?" and it does look like that. (Dang, she pays attention to me talking about brim trimming weeks ago, but has total amnesia when I ask her to tidy her room 5 times? [emoji849]).

Thoughts please?

Thoughts? My thought is, I love it. Everything about it; except the size and the fact it's not mine. :D

very strange

my first thought was ... oh just a strat that has been converted ... a la new ribbon and binding removed

but upon further review ... it doesn't really even look like a Strat block and that brim looks awfully thick to me ... I own 11 Stratoliners dating from the early 40s to mid 50s and none of them have a brim that thick

are their stetson markings on the felt inside ? ... size sticker ?... manufacturer tag? ... anything ?

I obviously don't have it in my hand ... but if those tags are not there I might go as for to say that someone took a liner and a sweat and threw them on an unrelated hood ...
