The funny thing is that the brim up all around is the style associated with your formal dress hats. The Homburg, tophat and bowler all have upturned brims that you couldn't turn down if you wanted to. I suppose a bowler in the 20s and before was the everyman hat though.
The brim up all around should be a more formal way to wear a hat but Hollywood perverts everything it touches. [huh]
That said, I am an informal guy myself. I even wear porkpies with the brim snapped down in front.

Hi, Riccardo! As far as I know, I don't have any Italian blood in me, but then again my mother was from Austria which is close.

But whether I do or I don't, I've always had a fondness for Italy even though I've never been there. Someday I will.

These guys are all working stiffs, truck drivers, right?
Bogart in this one ... Tracy and Gable in a couple ... Cooper in Meet John Doe ... you'll see the worn fedora with brim up in the front or even with brim down all the way around .... crown adjustments, even with buttons, etc., inserted into the ribbon, creating a more casual hat that gets exposed to the elements and to work conditions.

I could be way off here, but I believe the jughead beany ... you know, like the hat Goober wore on the Andy Griffith Show ... owes its origins to cutting the crown out of a toss-away fedora and then you cuff the crown to make a hat that keeps the greese out of your hair.
Printers had something like that, made from folding a page of news print the right way.
It was all needed in a time when baths were weekly and you didn't want to have completely filthy hair all week long.

Remember, back then you didn't have the toss away ball caps we have today.

I have taken to wearing both of my 2" brimmed Dobbs with the brims up all the way around. One is a fedora pinch and the other is a porker. Ive grown to accept the look, and now think its pretty durn cool.
