Ok guys need some advice. I am out of room in my closet for my hat boxes and was wanting to store my felts. I have a man cave that is a converted basement. I have hat boxes for each hat and was wondering if a basement would be an ok place to store hats. I would figure the lack of moisture would actually be good? Any help would be appreciated.

I guess it all comes down to your climate & what type of creepy crawlies would hang out in the basement
at least in the basement you can put mothballs in the boxes & not have to deal with its effects in the home.

I got lucky 7 years ago when the last kid moved out
got a Hat room now

Che has it right, Teach. Gotta watch out for the bugs. And other considerations are very much influenced by your local climate.

Those of us who recall the energy crunches of the early 1970s (doesn't seem that long ago) may remember the advice to close off unused rooms and thereby cut back on energy consumption. People up this way (Puget Sound area) who followed that advice soon found themselves with a lovely crop of mildew on every surface mildew might take hold.

It's a reminder that leaving houses unoccupied almost always results in significant damage. Some friends have the misfortune of living next door to a house that went into foreclosure a coupla-three or four years ago and has sat vacant ever since. I don't give it long before whoever ends up with the property will be faced with the decision of sinking a whole lotta dough into addressing all that has degraded since it was last occupied, or to just tear it down and start over.

Control the climate, as the other gents said, then you'll have quite the hat room. Add some racks with excellent wines, and you'll two reasons to hang out down there. :)

lol I love hanging out down there and figured adding it as hat storage was a big plus. I love seeing my hat boxes hang out next to my vintage record collection. Seems......right
