It seems he has been embarrassed into a U-turn by negative press and public reaction to the statement he would be wearing a lounge suit to William Windsor's wedding. It was a PR move to begin with, really - he is, as has been mentioned on TFL before now, a former member of the Bullingdon Club, and seems to go to great lengths to avoid being photographed in tails as this would provide the popular press with yet another excuse to dig up his embarrassing past. It seems, however, that this has been outweighed by a widely held perception that wearing a lounge suit was a cynical PR move. I like to think of myself as pretty objective on this front - I am very much not a royalist, and will not be watching the wedding in question - and my own opinion on this front is simply that he has been invited to the occasion as Prime Minister, not in his personal capacity, and therefore the appropriate thing to do is to dress in the prevailing manner for the event. Personally, I wish morning dress was more common at weddings. I have not yet been to one as a guest where it would have been appropriate for me as a non-member of the wedding party to don formal daywear, even where this would not have been more formal than the men directly involved. A shame, but then when one is invited to a wedding it would be extremely rude, in my opinion, to outdress those whose day it is!

Depends on what uniform he's wearing, but if he's wearing RAF uniform (which seems to be the prevailing opinion)...it's a tad complicated, as the RAF currently has no full dress (court dress equivalent, roughly), dress (frock coat equivalent. Ish) or undress (morning coat equivalent) uniform. Just the service dress (suit). Being uniforms, there are no hard and fast equivalent's, being completely separate from civil dress (the equivalents I gave are very much "ish"), and only the army has all the above orders of dress on the books still (though only service dress is issued, and you can get undress issued to you for certain occaisions, depending on the regiment; officers generally have service dress and undress, except in the guards when all orders of dress are owned/issued). The Navy has the dress and service dress uniforms on the books.

That said, there is a "blinged up" RAF service dress uniform, which they call "dress". Though only certain ranks have it. And it's not dress.

Hopefully they'll resurrect proper RAF dress uniforms...

STOP PRESS: It's seems likely he'll wear the uniform of the Colonel of the Irish Guards, to which he has just been appointed. Which makes life easier

Colonel eh!! Rapid Promotion then. That'll look very smart actually.

For reference to those interested (and I know that many of our American cousins are following the upcoming wedding with excitement): It's not William Windsor :) His name is - His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales (in the legal instance of a marriage, for example, Prince William's last name is Mountbatten-Windsor, but is not used publicly by the Royals).
Hope that helps!

I'm just glad he has got over himself with all that lounge suit business and decided to dress appropriately for the occasion. The words self-absorbed and precious came to mind when i read the original article.

I understand there is more to it than that, i'm sure it's all a PR stunt or what have you, (all that tosh about his Bullingdon past - tosh too), but come on, it's not cricket for someone of his status to even consider wearing a lounge suit to such an occasion i don't think. I mean Debrett's does say it is appropriate for men to wear a lounge suit at such an occasion, but HIS status is such that it obviously befits the morning suit or dress uniform option, so as i said i just think he was being a bit precious trying to make a fuss instead of just getting on with it.

He'll be trying to upstage the bride next.

My WW appellation was for William Wales - which I think is the name he was enrolled at university under.
