This is quite interesting, Dinerman. Without the deep center crease would you still see the apparent reverse taper? I agree with Mario, in that it's a great look. If this is a distinguishing feature of the 30's I'm a fan of 30's styled hats.

Open crowned, it would be straight sided. Creased, it angles in viewed from the front, angles out viewed from the side, giving it the "reverse taper"

No. What you would see, if looking at the crown from one side or the other, are near perfectly vertical front and back crown 'walls'.
