I have gotten interested in trying to pin down all the hats that Stetson put out in the 1980s during the Indiana Jones movies.

I own two of these hats (a gray one and a brown one). They both have the same crown label...

I was told these are from 1984. But I don't know that for sure, either.

They are both the 100% wool versions, not fur felt. I never wear them, and won't. I just bought them because they interested me.

But now I am interested about the other ones.

So, I ask of you Indy fans, show me your Stetson-made, "official" Indiana Jones hats.

I'd like to know how many models Stetson made. Can anyone tell me?

Wait! How can they make a "authentic indy jones hat" in a color that is not brown!?

Probably the same way every Indiana Jones licensed hat I've seen has a teardrop crown, instead of Indy's center dent.

That said, he did have a gray "travel hat" in two of the movies.

Yeah, not a single one of the Stetson offerings were much like the real, screen-used Indy hats.

But I am not looking for a true-to-life repro of an Indy hat. I am interested in what Stetson offered.

Truth be told, I would never wear a true repro of the Indy hat. That style looks very bad on me. My face does not fit the tall, square-sided crown shape. As I mentioned on this board before, I had a Fed IV and got rid of it not the least because it looked bad on me.

But I am interested to see what Stetson did with its Indy license.

I remember reading (probably on the COW forum) that a Stetson made hat was used for publicity shots - no doubt includes the one posted above) and also was used in at least one scene in one of the films.

It always seemed odd to me that although Stetson bought a licence to sell the "Authorized Indy Hat" they didn't make any attempt to sell a hat that looked even remotely like the hat in the films. From reading the IndyGear site, it looks as though Stetson just let the license lapse after a while - it should have been a cash cow.

fedoracentric - I think you need to expand the collection to the Dorfmann and Mayser offerings too ;)

LOL. Then that would take forever! Of course, I don't consider Dorfmann a real hat company so.... Ohhhhhh, takes a shot!
:)

Seriously, though, I am only interested in what Stetson did with the franchise. There are 100 other hat companies that have "Indiana Jones" hats, too.

I have one. It was given to me by my aunt and has been in a box in my closet for many years. I'll get it down and take a look at it as I don't remember the details of the hat.

In the mid-80s, I had one of the fur felt Stetson Indy hats that were sold right after Temple of Doom came out.

I think I paid around $50. The felt and build quality were quite good, except for one thing: the sweatband was cloth, not leather. But it was a solid hat, it held up to rain and snow well. After a few years, I went up a hat size and retired it - I gave it to my kids for costume play. Alas, I lost it in my divorce back in 2000...
