Hello all.
Thank you for allowing me to join the forum.
I am a complete novice to the world of hats, and apparently didn't do enough research when I was tasked with selling my late Father-in-law's hats.
I listed what appears to be a vintage Stetson 100 on eBay without knowing whether it was desirable or not.
Take a look (my username is "kmango") let me know what you think.

BTW... I had to correct the size...
It's a 7 1/4

Don‘t go too early on the dates - the lower production Stetsons often kept the stars on the sweatbands longer. The Stetson 100s are the prime example. Note the maple on the liner, the plastic on the liner, and the size tag. All together they point to later-50s.

This is a great hat, although in my experience the 100s began losing some ground around this time. I believe Alan said it best on one of the threads when he mentioned he had sold all of his…

Good luck!

WOW !!!!!!! I believe the size Tag was added later, maybe 1960 s . The brown sweatband has stars in the logo Early 1950 s maybe late 1940 s this is a must for collectors I am all in on this beauty

Creative hat dating 101…classes ongoing
Going to add to the creative dating here...
This hat was my wife's Great Uncle Jimmy's (initials in hatband).
We believe it was a gift from his sister (we called her Grammy).

During the 1950's, Grammy worked directly for the Neiman Marcus family taking care of the family heirs, and throughout this time she could afford to give family members some rather nice gifts. (we inherited some of these items when she passed).

That doesn't mean it wasn't from the 1960's+...but it would make sense given she had the disposable income at the time, and was working for those who were accustomed to the finer things in life.

Questions for the experts here...
-the inner liner is plastic covered, the size tag is square, the hatband is thin and the box is circular (non-suitcase) with the leather strap...all pointing to 1960's + (right?)
-the inner liner is muted goldish and not colored logo, and the sweatband is the older style (with what appear to be stars...not really sure what I'm looking for though)...pointing to 1950's -

Did Stetson mix & match some of these parts during the One Hundred's lifespan?
(going to repost this in another spot on the forum to see if anyone has answers)

...you guys/gals are starting to get me interested in hat collecting.
This is not good...
my wife tolerates my audiophile equipment / vinyl collecting only because she likes music.
Not sure I can bring another obsession into the house.

Thanks @MikeinRome , I really appreciate all your time spent helping educate me.

Totally unrelated question...
I've perused this forum, and it appears the majority of discussions are polite, cordial & friendly.
Is that the general tone of this forum?

I left most online audio/music forums because of the childish flaming & bickering.
(only on Steve Hoffman Forums now...a famous recording mastering engineer, and most of the banter is from people who just love music...very few childish arguments)

-Cheers!

This is from towards the end of the run for the One-Hundred. I’d say mid to late 1960s. Dating them isn’t always exact, but everything I see on this hat says 1960s to me. Stetson’s quality was in steep decline during this time, but all of the One-Hundred hats are worth owning at the right price.

Every now and again someone is not nice...

But most of the obnoxious people have moderated or drifted away. It’s worth adding that we want you to be a collector too, we need more numbers ; )

I'm finding that out during this process.
The (somewhat) odd thing about this particular auction, I have several Asian country bidders...
No disparagement, but I didn't expect this much interest in Asia.

I expected at least some activity for the hats I've listed, what with the popularity of programs like "Yellowstone" and "Peaky Blinders" where hats are prominently featured, and of course the OG community here picked up on the One Hundred.

Vintage hats I Japan are routinely listed for four to ten times the average US eBay price.

See:

Funny thing here...
I grew up in the south, lived in Texas many years and have only owned 1 hat (baseball caps excluded).

I actually found a copy of my old hat from when I was a teenager for sale on eBay.
Pic below...
(yes, it's pretty pathetic compared to some of the beauties I've seen of y'alls...like @drmaxtejeda 's BOP & Ermine).
Vintage Rugged 5X Beaver Bull Rider Cowboy Hat Western Ranchman Outfitters Brown
Hey...it's all I could afford at the time.

So you FL members may be a bad influence on me, but I'm now looking for a 200X or maybe 500X I could wear to the Fort Worth Stockyard or maybe Houston Livestock Show.
Any suggestions?

My advice is to go with a custom hat and choose the hatter carefully. You can get a top tier pure beaver custom western for $600 or less. These hats equal or surpass many/most of the hats costing three times as much or more.
