Stetson Nutria

[Tango Yankee]

Just for fun I bid on a hat listed as a Stetson Western Cowboy Felt Hat. One of the photos of the lining showed the style as Stetson Nutria. The description and the additional info the seller posted made it sound as if it wasn't in the greatest shape, but what the heck for $17.

Bought another felt cowboy hat for a quarter, but that's another story.

I'm wondering if they were really made of Nutria fur. Probably.

Does it feel any different from good beaver hats? Nice and soft?

Nutria: South American beaver like rodent.
Imported to Louisiana for fur farming in the 1930s, escaped and now found in Louisiana and Portland, Oregon.

Very odd looking, small beaver size critter with muskrat like tail.

I know that with the old stetson rating system, 7x was pure beaver, and 10x was pure nutria, so I'm assuming that nutria is better than beaver?

Nutria is soft and durable and very expensive - so you got a good deal. It's a nice enough hat as it is - but I'd look into having it fedora-ized.

Actually, the hat I got for a quarter is an unknown at this point--just know it's a felt cowboy hat. We'll see when it gets here!
