3X Mode Edge Stetson New York. The brim is 2-11/16". The gray has green/blue slight tint. 20 ligne(1-3/4" ribbon). Open crown is tall but with a moderately curved shoulder. The original crease is rotated about 5 degrees clockwise (looking down onto top of crown)

Never heard of a "New York" until you got this one. Thanks for sharing the info. It shares many features and spec of my Stetson Twenty Mode Edge. Very nice fedora for sure! :eusa_clap

Very nice. Gotta love those 3X Mode Edge Stetsons.

What does the Stetson logo look like? Does it say 3X below
the medallion or something else?

Absolutely beautiful lid, rlk. I agree with feltfan -- those 3X Mode Edge Stetsons are very nice. Interesting color, as well.

I believe that "Stetson New York" indicates that this particular lid came from Stetson's retail store in New York (in other words, it is not a model designation). Another example of this can be found on page 37 of Snyder's Stetson Hats book.

Cheers,

While not info to be certain, the logo with crest, full John B. and Fifth Avenue seemed to be the one used for the store(similar to the Phila. Chestnut St store) Just Stetson and New York with a different typeface seems more like a model name.
I'll try to search ads to clarify if possible...

I think that "STETSON" with "New York" in smaller type underneath it is more likely tied to a place rather than a model -- especially considering that the info we're talking about is printed on the sweat in the place generally reserved for that purpose.

Just by way of example, the method for identifying the store location differed over time. Here are two examples from the Stetson Philadelphia factory store:

1952

Note that the 1952 designation (which is closer in time to the 3X in question), features the store info in smaller type under the word "Stetson." While there is no street address on your lid, Robert, I don't think that changes the analysis.

Still, it will be interesting to see whatever you may find in an ad search...:)

Incidentally, as far as I am aware (and excluding the Open Road family), the only vintage 3X Stetson fedora that actually included a model name was the "Bantam." I'd be curious to know if there are other examples out there...

This one seems to match the New York Store example in the Snyder Book exactly in style.

You may be correct, but the 3X crest precludes using the other side and all the other examples mention the street. Probably irrelevant, but Dobbs regularly used that position on the sweatband for names. Stetson stuck "The Avenue" everywhere too.

So far no references or ads to Stetson New York. Stetson Fifth Avenue was trademarked but not Stetson New York. All of the references to the New York Store have said Stetson Fifth Avenue but they seem to be pay per view so I can't see them:rage: :rage: :rage: Stetson Fifth Avenue labels are common but mostly for women's hats.

1952?

Odd that this hat from 1952 has the fabric reed cloth and overstitching--are you sure the date is on the right picture?

Surprising, what is the model?

Apparently, it's the "1224 Chestnut" model...;) :D

On a more serious note -- looks like both our 3X's share the same style, which was fairly common for the Stetson 3X Mode Edge lids...

Cheers,
JtL
