Stetson Gun Club Three Forks Vs. Akubra Campdraft

Didn't realize that my inquiry would result in such a lean towards the Akubra Campdraft. Works for me as I do already have one or two Akubra hats. But I was thinking some Stetson fans would chime in. Apparently, the Akubra beats it hands down or the Stetson fans are just shy. (???)

So, I'm gonna go where I was heading...Campdraft. Was just thinking it would be nice to have a Stetson in my mix. My old Stetson and Resistol lids are MIA as is my old Akubra with a leather band....that was a cool hat. About 12 years ago.

Thanks to all for your reinforcement of what I knew was right.
As I learned in church..."Choose The Right" (CTR).

Here are my two Gun Clubs. The one one the most left is Starburst. The one on the most right is a Diamond Jim.

There ya go, Goose. The Three Forks isn't too bad a lid for putsing around, but it ain't no Campdraft by a good long shot. I've got half a dozen Whippets and three Strats, and I love them every one. I'd have one of each in every color if I could, but the Three Forks just isn't in the same category IMHO if anyone cares. I'll be watching to see you in your new silverbelly CD.

Campdraft in Silverbelly

Goose - I've seen your photos, and you and I aren't far apart facially, and apparently style-wise. I just got a Silverbelly Campdraft from Hatsdirect, and the wait was short, the service excellent, and the hat is top notch. If I want a quality cowboy hat, or a vintage fedora, I'd buy Stetson. For anything else, Akubra has really impressed me. I think you'll be very pleased. Frank

That's quite a way with words there Chuck. Ever think about going into public speaking? :D

Like a coffee spokesperson you mean? lol

Honestly, rrog...as much as I come back and edit my posts here, I would probably have to keep reassembling the crowd I was talking to over and over to clear up what I meant when I spoke to them the first time. :D

Its all about survival at this point.

If you want stetson to continue to make the style of hats that are not of the western family, you must buy them.

I have many older stetsons, borsalinos, dobbs, champs, penneys marathons, etc. etc. if you want to be able to buy stetson fedoras in th efuture you must support them now. australia is well.....australis. if you beleive in "god bless America"...,, then buy american.

I buy Pendleton shirts from the US because they are good quality and a good product. Shops in Australia used to stock Stetson Hats and there were plenty of Australians that wore them. I don't see them in shops now, nor do I know anyone that wears a Stetson. I have no idea why, but I suggest, an American company should be able to make a hat of equivalent quality and price to the Australian one... afterall, we have Unions and a Socialist government in Australia, so if Akubra is turning out a quality product at a good price in a country where manufacturing costs are relatively high, then maybe you should support them to keep them in business and as a message to Stetson to pull their finger out, as wouldn't be their patriotic duty to produce a better product at the same or better price?

I agree. "Supporting" Stetson by buying unworthy products from them just sends them the wrong message (that people like them even if they don't try). If they see that their non-cowboy products are not bought, while Akubra seems to make a good business on that market, they will hopefully try to compete and will improve their quality. That's how market forces are meant to work.

Stetson makes some nice hats, mostly western and pricy, but the Gun Club model does not fit this category.

My Campdraft and Campdraft deluxe seem far nicer than the lower end Stetson's, so my vote is for the Campdraft. A plus for it is that it comes open crown so you can shape it like you want. I do not know how the Gun Club would take to rebashing.

All that said I just ordered a 20X Stetson Open road, we will see how it compares, being kind of a crossover between a Fedora and a true western. I have a vintage Open Road that is nice and soft and a rather new 6X that is stifff as a board..
