Bump.
My latest addition. Beautiful condition. It is a true 7 1/4. Bummer, since I am a 7 1/4 LO. It's just a bit too tight.

Nice find. On a side note, I grew up with the family that owned the Popular in El Paso. By the 1980's it was a full size, higher end department store in the mall. I dare say that you would have been far pressed to find a western hat in it at that point.

Well I botched that post up, I meant to say, but not add to the quote...

Is there no edit feature on this new setup?

There is an edit feature but it's not as obvious as the previous setup.

Great info on that store. Really cool. Regarding your comment on finding western wear in a higher end department store, I have a 1950s Stetson Nutria Quality western that was purchased from Marshall Field's. I have a hard time picturing that retailer stocking western hats but I guess that was more common back in the day.

Just dug this one out and realized I hadn't posted it. Stetson 7X Open Road. Has Maple leaf on sweatband and crown liner. Clear plastic tip cover. 102 block.

Nice one. I remember Battelstein's in Houston, the store from whence it came.

The 7X Clear Beaver Quality Western (Open Road) was Stetson Top of the Line in the 1950's, 60's, Harry S. Truman had one, Lyndon Baines Johnson wore one, I think "I Like Ike" Eisenhower had one also, several Power Players had them, it was a Status Symbol for the Out West crowd in DC back in the day....They were not known to be a soft, supple hat, they were usually on the stiff side to hold that special shape and give the Formal look...
Now Howard Hughes on the other hand wore a Stratoliner, soft, supple, very casual style...

Well, if you are going by price as top of the line, the Stetson 100 was that hat. Although, the almost impossible to find $150 Stetson Ermine, might also qualify. Also, there are certainly examples of 7X's that are stiffer, but some of the nicest felt I've handled are also 7X variants. It just depends.
