I dated my nail tech for about a year. He hated working on my hands, but loved the look. It's a really long story. I've had that same conversation as well, and then they still try and give me square.
Ultimately, he admitted the square took about a fourth of the time really shaping ovals does and that's why they pushed them.
When I keep my nails shorter (to the tips of the fingers) I do the squoval. Once they hit long length, mainly wintertime, I go back to ovals. If I get them done, I get ovals no matter what, but my length I have now makes them look shorter.
As to length, I have a "sport" length and when I ask for it, I don't have the length problem, just the shaping.
