sports coat: good, bad or ugly?

For some reason I have an odd fascination with '70s sports coats.


How about this one, good or bad? Are the pocket and back treatments too much? The button stance is a little too low for my liking but it's got a nice cut to it. It's black, feels like a poly blend.

Does it strike you as more '30s or '70s?

It's that 'poly' part that blows it for most coats from that era. Style-wise, that one looks pretty good. If it doesn't have that rough, double-knit, spun plastic feel about it then you're home free.

With a cursory glance, your coat does have a strong 1930's feel. It has a suppressed waist, belted back and actually - decent fabric -- the 1930's inspiration is definitely present. The devil is in the details, however, and with that being said there are some very 70's things going on with your coat.

The way the pockets were sewn creates an odd visual effect. It looks like there are 4 staggered patch pockets stacked on top of each other. The belt would seem to be made after the same fashion. Maybe I just haven't encountered it yet, but I haven't seen anything like that on a 1930's period coat before. Not sure how, but maybe something could be done there. The sleeves are also shorter in relation to the overall jacket length than most 1930's coats I've seen.

It's also hard to tell in the photos, but does your coat have side vents? I know they sometimes had vents in the 1930's, but if you closed up any vents your coat might have it would go a long way towards cleaning up the silhouette, and making it look more of the era you want it to.

If I had it, I'd probably wear it. I bet it would be pretty sharp with cream trousers, a contrasting (maybe patterned) vest and spectator shoes -- I imagine you were probably thinking something along those lines as well.

The pocket and belt stitching threw me a first too but grew on me. The sleeves would have to be let down if I wear it and I'd stitch up the double vents as well.
