You might post some of these photos so we know exactly to which you refer. I'm guessing standard styles using the heavier fabric of yesteryear but.......

I have a 1934 Belgian single breasted peak lapel suit jacket that has material much heavier than a modern overcoat, and comparable to a WWII peacoat in terms of material weight. Really beautiful material and cut. Good to about freezing.

Also, the "Old Town" jackets are pretty much what I'm describing.
