Sport coat and jeans??

First, jeans, a button down shirt and a sports coat is a can’t fail look to impress your date and help you look your best.

I have actually done this before, and if done properly, I don't think it's a bad look. This look is not, however, an example of a particularly elegant way to wear a sport coat. I think sport coats look more "natural" with slacks or chinos. This is a combo that can still carry with it class, yet simplicity at the same time. I don't think it's something one should wear a tie with, though. Jeans and ties don't mix well, although I've seen some pull it off.

I have a date coming up and would like to dress a bit more then my normal Jeans and polo shirt and fedora, but not as much as my profile photo.

Here is what I have.

I am afraid it's too much blue but my female friends say it looks nice.

But I have also read things like "The most important consideration in your trouser selection (assuming they are clean and well kept) is not to have them closely match the jacket." So I am afraid that the dark blue jeans will match too close to the navy blue jacket.

Also should I tuck the shirt into the jeans?

The thing about "If done well" or "Some guys can pull it off" or "If done right" is that most just don't fit those catigories and don't do it well, can't pull it off and never do it right.
Jeans with a sports coat makes me wonder where you lost your slacks? Didn't look smart when it started, doesn't look smart now.

So how does one pull off a fancy/casual look? I don't want suit and tie, but don't want jeans and t-shirt look. I want something that makes the girl say "Wow he knows how to dress to impress" but not "Wow, I am way under dressed."

Well, if your going to do it you have to make sure it fits the date. I did say "most". Remember the Some guys, if done right part. Will there be dancing/clubbing? Where are you eating? Do you plan on keeping your jacket on or is it an accsessory? There is a recent post on the pages right now "Born in a Suit." Check it the last post by B.J., the part from Jimm Wagner, last line in it is the most important part about any style of dressing. If you are confident in your skin, she"ll see that and your half way home.

How about a nice pair of slacks and a button up shirt with neatly rolled up sleeves? If no slacks, try the above but with the jeans and black shoes.

If she is going for it dress-wise (This would be rather strange for Olive Garden, but you never know), accompanying her in jeans might be a bit light dress-wise. But if she's likely to wear jeans or something similarly casual, jeans and a sportscoat should be fine. IIRC, dating in America is all about her.

Just one worry: won't a sportscoat be a bit much for GA evening in August?

p.s. Ignore this "if you're confident …" business. People will judge on first impressions. If she thinks you look like a square, or a dork, she'll end the evening thinking you're a confident square or a confident dork, but the first impression will remain. Further dates are unlikely to follow.

*sigh* I guess I will just dress how I always do, better to dress in something she has seen and likes, then to risk looking like a dork.

Hi,

Throwing on a sportscoat with a button down shirt or polo sweater, plus jeans and some sort of casual shoes will do fine for the type of plan you have in mind. It will reflect you are doing an effort to look good for the occasion. Unless wearing this is way too different of your normal attire (that is, something too unexpected) and specially of the attire she is going to wear (as has already been mentioned), you will do a good impression.

Go with this. You'll look terrific. If you have a cotton or linen pocket square then use it. White works (of course) but a color other than blue may be what you're looking for to break the all-blue thing. Shirt out says now. Shirt in says classic. Hope this helps!
