So tempted to order a pair of the brown&white ones (plus completely whites). Did you check the soles? What material are they really?

My latest acquisition, a beautiful new pair of Allen Edmonds' Strawfut spec's. Many thanks to Matt Deckard for getting the ball rolling to have these added to their line-up!

They look very nice unlike the Allan Edmonds pics. What I can't understand about AE was why they did not simply make them in walnut like the good old days and they would be walking out the door. That brown is hard colour to match to a suit or even chinos IMO.

Fun Hawaii historical fact. Liberty House was the old plantation store for H. Hackfield and Company one of the 'Big Five'. The Big Five was the five largest businesses in Hawaii that essentially used to run the state back in territorial days (you can think of late 1890s-1910s Robber Baron/Gilded Age era). Since H. Hackfield had been founded by a German immigrant to Hawaii when the US declared war on Germany in WWI, the H. Hackfield company was siezed under by Alien Property Custodian. When reformed they renamed the company something really patriotic, American Factors (more commonly known as Amfac), and of course the old plantation store needed a Patriot name too, so... Liberty House! One can think of similar renaming of "German" things during WWI as well in other countries.

In South Australia the Barossa Valley was colonized in part by Germans. So Schneestadt became Snowtown in WWI

Alright Vim, just this once we'll make an exception. ;)

opinion of the modern Florsheim spectators?
Aesthetically, the Marlton looks OK.....nothing drool worthy, just OK. Of course the quality isn't there but what would you expect at that price-point. I would consider them as a borderline disposable shoe, à la Stacy Adams.

is there another brand of shoe I should be looking at instead?
Well, at roughly 3x the price of the Marlton you can get Allen Edmonds MTO (made to order) with choice of leathers/colors which, because they can be refurbished at the factory, will give you years and years (decades?) of service. Funny thing about shoes, the cheap disposable ones end up being more expensive in the long run.

And there's always the clearance rack at Brooks Brothers where you can often pick up their Peal & Co. (English made) shoes at a great price but that's hit or miss, especially for specs.

Those are a nice weave design.

Can we ask questions about spectators here? Here goes, what is folks' opinion of the modern Florsheim spectators? I've got a pair of their saddle oxfords that I like but if I'm buying a proper two tone spectator is there another brand of shoe I should be looking at instead?
Also I'm not considering vintage, I just cannot wear vintage shoes for some reason.

Fair enough. I don't know your size but just buy a pair of Crockett and Jones new. Go to eBay.com and punch in spectators or two tone shoes. http://cgi.ebay.com/Crockett-Jones-...ing_Menswear_MensShoes_GL&hash=item53e6fcfd8a http://cgi.ebay.com/Charles-Tyrwhit...ing_Menswear_MensShoes_GL&hash=item5198a84b6a
