Nice looking specs sproily and at a fairly reasonable price.

I wore my old RL Polos to the office yesterday - nicely made shoes!

I finally went and picked up my two pairs of custom made spectators today in Delhi at Connaught Place.

First pair, made by Mehrason (est. 1947). Lighter brown and white, in a punched wingtip style.

Second pair, mad by John Brothers (est. 1938), a darker, burgendy brown (oxblood?) and white in a punched wingtip style.

I'm quite pleased with them so far. The John Brothers seems slightly more sturdy with slightly thicker leather used. My first two pairs of spectators!

I'll try and break them in this weekend at a function.

Thanks! The top pair was about $75USD, and the bottom was about $110 or so.

Being in India is quite interesting for clothes and shoes buying. For the first pair I was walking by a shop that had an identical pair but in blue and white in the window. I came in and asked the gentleman if they had a pair but with brown. He said, "Yes I can make you a pair if you want." I double taked and asked, "Make?" So next thing he started measuring my feet and then we talked prices. John Brothers was very similar, but they had more options for toe style, punching designs, etc.

Delivery time was about two weeks.

I prefer the shape of the last on the top pair (slimmer in the forefoot) but the quality of make/hide on the bottom pair appears to be significantly superior. Overall, quite a value. Well done!

Yes, that is a much better way of putting my thoughts together than I had written. I like the shape of the lighter pair, but strongly feel the leather and construction of the darker pair is better.

The first pair was a gamble, I didn't know anything about the firm, but thought 'why not at that price? It's worth the gamble." John Brothers on the other hand is quite a well known firm that I had researched ahead of time.

Yes Tomasso you are right...the construction is more robust and better finished...even the punching is better done and the leather is superior.

Could you supply an address?

Cheers

These are my favorites. They even have a bit of a spade sole!

Did they have the pattern or did you give them something to copy in the time honoured way?

BTW my avatar is a gilded plaster 1930s countertop piece called "The Weyenberg Man". I have a pair of Weyenbergs and I recently sold a pair as well. Superb shoes.

Hi Cookie,

For John Bros. here is their site: http://www.johnbrothers.co.in/

Not much information on the site, but they work from both their existing models and also can copy things if you give them a sample.

I used their standard 'wingtip' model as the base and then picked the leather I wanted, the toe shape and the punching pattern.

In theory yes.

The problem is the measurements and if they are willing to have you send in measurements or if they require that they take them themselves. I asked specifically if they could keep my measurements on file so I can order more shoes in the future (assuming they wear well, etc.). They said no problem, though they hinted that I shouldn't wait more than 5 years or so otherwise they might not keep the measurements on file longer than that if I don't order.
