How specialised are those two procedures? Will most shoe rebuilders do that?

Hey David,

I don't know about most rebuilders...but I use Reibe Shoe Repair here in Boise. They are a family of cobblers that have been in business here for almost a century. I use Bob Reibe specifically.

He simply resoles the shoes and adds the female spike screws into the new soles. Your spikes will screw in like any high end golf shoe. You can pick any pattern you want the spikes to be in. I use the standard pattern like on a FootJoy Classic. To remove spikes, he just does a full resole.

The whole thing costs about $60.00 per pair. I've had him do 5 pairs over the last few years... All Allen Edmonds.

Don't fret. I just won (YEAH, ME) a pair of the A&E McClains in bone/bourbon on Ebay. My size is a 9.5 3E and thought the same thing. I bought a cheaper pair of black and white spectators in that size because I thought "they will never have factory seconds of the A&E's in my size." They did and I can kick myself for not waiting and opting for a lesser pair.

My question - does anyone else own the bone/bourbon McClain spectators?

What do you like to wear them with?

I have seen the McClains in my size. I was referring specifically to the brown/white Broadstreets when I doubted that I'd ever see my size on ebay.

Summer specs just arrived!! (pics).

Thanks to Mister Jordan for these lovely Bally (of Switzerland) shoes (as posted earlier in the Classifieds section). A light 'oatmeal' coloured canvas/linen compliments the lovely leather caps and heels to create a wonderful Gatsbyesque summer shoe. Can't wait for the summer to come now!

Sassman, it all depends on how you accessorise the rest of it. Personally, I prefer blacks with navy, but if you've got browns that work with the blue (hat, belt, etc), then the brown and whites could work just as well.



Pretty much all my polishes are the Kiwi brand - their range includes a "neutral," which I find is ideal for a two-colour shoe. I'm sure most big brands do a neautral too.

You know Edward, I must have looked at your answer a dozen times in the past month and never realized you were replying to me, as well as Classyguy. Thank you for the advice and forgive me for not noticing until now.

If you cannot control you finger - that is the answer- Kiwi is good....presuming they are all leather - with buckskin/leather combo it becomes more difficult.. Here is some further advice from an AAAC poster

I have 3 pairs...2x AE Broadstreets B&W and Tan&W and a pair of burgundy and white buckskin/leather combo. I also have a B&W and Br&W mesh spectators from the 50s.

Can anyone help me out? Modern preferred as I don't have buckets of money to throw at them and they need to be in 12D or 13D.

I purchased a pair of Allen Edmonds Ramsey Linen/Cognac shoes from the AE Ebay Store, and I think these are not only a very versatile shoe, but that they scream cool and class all at once! I, too, wear a wide size, 10 EEE, and thought I'd never find this style of shoe in my size. Well I did, and I like them so well I'm watching for other similar styles on the AE Ebay site all the time.

Actually, I performed as a 40's Paparazzi, for a corporate function, at Hollywood & Highland Friday night and was on my feet for about 3 hours straight. The shoes remained quite comfortable the whole time. Additionally, no "break-in" time was needed with these. They were comfortable right out of the box.

I bought a pair as well - I had an online coupon from Blair for $15 off or something like that and thought at the sale price less coupon, I'd be a fool not to try them. As Sassman mentioned, I expected something less than the actual result. No real break in period, and more comfortable than I'd expected, and great compliments galore when I wore them.

Shoes, fitting, the magic of sizing?

Alright, much to my dismay, I think I've discovered that almost NONE of my shoes fit me correctly.
I realize the ball of your foot should hit right about the widest part of the shoe- the heel should fit and not slide, etc etc.
Has anyone ever done the "We'll mail you a clay slab and you step on it! Then, we'll tell you what size and width your foot is." or do the online tips work well enough?
Hint: I may be unloading some slightly-worn shoes. None vintage, but all classic or retro styled....

Check out the ebay store for Allen Edmonds. I've bought most of the shoes pictured from there and I don't remember paying anymore than $125 to $150. Often these shoes are "seconds" but the flaws are so minor that I can't seem to define them on any of my shoes. They all looked great to me.

I just kept checking back over and over and eventually my size and style would pop up.

Unfortunatly you are one of the many that does not fit in modern shoes well. My guess based on your post is that you are wearing shoes too long in order to get the width you need. thus the heel slipping and the location of the ball of your foot.
Shoes are built on a last which determines the length, width, heel height arch length(where the widest part of the shoe is in relation to the length of the last) and toe shape. No two styles have the same dimensions. There is no standard set of measure for a specific size and width so one set of lasts in a specific size may vary considerably from another even though they seem to have the same shape. I assume by the clay tablet you mean a foam pad that can be mailed. this will help a maker I would also suggest a tracing of the foot taken while standing and a measure of the circumfrence of the ball of the foot. In addition take your measure on a Brannock device.
