Skyview on Route 66

Hi

I went to this place a couple of times in high school ('79).

http://www.litchfieldskyview.com/

Their website asks that all pickup trucks go to the back row, which is where we went. Lawn chairs in the back of the truck, cooler after cooler of Pabst. No privacy whatsoever. The two or three times I went, at least 50 people from my high school (aged 15-25 obviously including graduates) were there too. A guy I was working with was attempting to make out with his date, but since I knew him, I took a turn going to over to talk to him. When you were halfway back from talking to him, the next person would take off for their turn. He eventually just gave up and drove over...lol There may have been movies playing, but I don't remember seeing any of them.

I don't know why they're not on the Route 66 website.

This place is still open and isn't on it either:

http://www.route66-drivein.com/drive-in_welcome.htm My parents took me to this place, but I slept through whatever was playing. There were two or three other drive-in's in Springfield IL until the 1990's, but they are apparently closed now.

My kids hate drive-ins, but thats because we went to see Waterworld...

Happy Hollingshead Day, everyone!

It was 79 years ago tonight that Richard Hollingshead Jr. opened the world's first drive-in in Camden, New Jersey. The first feature? Wives Beware (1932), starring Adolph Menjou.

Google's marking the occasion with this delightful "doodle," and I encourage you to celebrate by patronizing your nearest drive-in theatre!

I hate Google but some of their doodles are pretty darn cool, this one being my top favorites. The nearest drive-in where I live has been closed for several years and is now home to a RV lot and show room. You can still see the screen behind some trees. :(

I remember being fascinated by "The Guiness Book of World Records" as a kid in the '70's. One of the facts I remember was the country with the most drive in theatres. It wasn't the US but the USSR that had the most.
