I'm surprised no one has mentioned this series.
On Starz, does anyone watch SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND?
last episode is next Friday, its almost worthy as HBOs Rome.

To me it had a decidedly "300" look about it. Being a serious student of ancient history, that alone is enough for me to give it a pass.

Unless of course, Tony Curtis gets a cameo role.

Marcus Licinius Crassus: Do you eat oysters?
Antoninus: When I have them, master.
Marcus Licinius Crassus: Do you eat snails?
Antoninus: No, master.
Marcus Licinius Crassus: Do you consider the eating of oysters to be moral and the eating of snails to be immoral?
Antoninus: No, master.
Marcus Licinius Crassus: Of course not. It is all a matter of taste, isn't it?
Antoninus: Yes, master.
Marcus Licinius Crassus: And taste is not the same as appetite, and therefore not a question of morals.
Antoninus: It could be argued so, master.
Marcus Licinius Crassus: My robe, Antoninus. My taste includes both snails and oysters.

Visually I find it very appealing, the story and writing much less so. The acting is not bad, the actors just don't have very good material to work with. It's not quite pornography, but pretty close. Might as well call it Spartacus: S&M

I agree to a certain degree on the writing, could have been better, you will have to remember that this was ancient Rome or a city near by, the period settings, rough language, nudity, as it was, plus brutal combat of gladiators. It was a violent era all over Europe. Not for the meek or weak stomach.
It is pay for cable broadcasting.
Note warning of content at beginning of each episode.
I wish is that they didn't rely so much on computer graphics or animation like "300" Other than that, it is as it was in Roman times. I favor HBOs "ROME" far much better, but I like Spartacus, it took a while to settle in :)

Yeah I have to say that the whole 300 look is a fad that was getting tiresome in the last half hour of that movie, not to mention a whole TV show.

I think the dialogue is really quite fun. They have written it with latin syntax and phrases in mind. It sounds very odd and stilted at first but it's sort of charming in it's own way.

The progression of the story is brutal, and Hannah and Lawless are so nasty and obviously relishing the roles.

A guilty pleasure.

With the warning they give at the beginning of each episode about trying to recreate the Roman era, it makes me wonder how much they're making up with the latin syntax and phrasing. I'm liking the style of the speech overall, and from what little I've studied about ancient Rome, they certainly had a different view of sex and the like, so I'm not surprised that this version of Spartacus is nudity-and-sex-heavy. Not that I find anything wrong with that, since I don't see it as mere sexual exploitation.

Since I was a sucker for Xena: Warrior Princess, it's not much of a shock for me to like this latest Raimi/Talpert project.
