Panama Bob, do they actually make Montecristi hats in a brisa weave? Or are all brisa hats Cuenca?

Michael D, there are a couple of nice pictures to show the difference between brisa and llano weaves here: http://www.panamas.co.uk/info_grades.htm

I checked out the site and then looked at the hat body again. It appears to be a brisa weave rather than a llano weave. Of course, that's not going to stop me from having it blocked. ;) I'm sure it will make a nice hat even if it doesn't last as long as my Montecristi. :)

Mike

PS. I pose the same question to Panama Bob. Are all brisa weave hats from Cuenca or are some made in Montecristi???

Thanks.

Brisa, Buly, Crochet, and some others....Cuenca only. I've seen Llano in Cuenca as fine hats and as people trying to cash in on the Montecristi name.

I've only seen the traditional weave from the barrios around Montecristi; so far no other weave types.

Hat store in NYC

Howdy! Never posted before (and not really sure where this post should go) but found a great little hat store this weekend and wanted to share with you boys. The site doesn't have much but the retail store is chock full of hats for men- fedoras, panamas, and casual. Yes ladies they do have a few for us gals, but not near the mens selection. And the prices seemed quite resonable. Here is the site (The Village Scandal): http://www.villagescandal.com/ and if you are in NYC you can check it out on 7th between 2nd & 3rd Ave.

First post here on the lounge. First off, great site. I absolutely love it!

Well, I have searched and searched (Google Advanced search) the lounge and have not found any reference to the following site:

http://www.panamahatshop.com/

Has anyone dealt with them? Good? Bad? Beware?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You!

Welcome, hogateb. Sorry, I can't give you any feedback on that seller, but I can recommend Panamabob. If you click on his name a few posts up, you can choose to view his web page. He is fair and reliable, and he has great product. I have two hats from him. One blocked in the US which is amazing, and another blocked in Equador. The quality of that hat is great, but the block wasn't. (This was probably 5 years ago...things may have changed, and/or I might have been unlucky.) He happily offered to reblock it, but I did it myself and am happy with it.

Welcome to the Lounge Sir. I just tried emailing this site and in both ways offered, the email link would not work. I'm suspicious when that sort of thing happens so I would advise sticking with who we know & that is PanamaBob

Thanks everyone for the quick responses.

Most replies came to the conclusion that I had reached before my post which was Panama Bob is probably the best way to go. Everything I read says that he runs a top notch operation. I may give panamahatshop.com a shot just to see what it ends up looking like. Just not really keen on taking a chance like that with my hard earned $'s. If I do, I will be sure to post some pics.

Thanks again for the input. I really appreciate it!

Welcome! Or you could get one from Panamabob unblocked, and have Mr. Fawcett do the detailing on it.

I should have mentioned...the hat that I describe in my previous post as "amazing", was blocked by the very same Mr. Fawcett.

I had purchased a felt fedora last fall from Hats in the Belfry for a costume party to complete a gangster costume. Wanted an OK hat and not something crazy expensive. Living where I live, there are not a lot of options other than buying online. This hat has led to an interest in hats.

For Easter, my boys decided to wear seersucker suits and I "had" to get a Panama hat to complete mine. The only thing I could put my hands on in time for Easter was this one:

http://www.hatsinthebelfry.com/Merc...n=PROD&Store_Code=h&Product_Code=belfry-daley

Not sure it is worth the money, but it got here and served its purpose. I have worn it every day since it arrived too.

I also picked up this one which is a PanamaBob hat and I am excited for it to arrive:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemVersion&&item=230454048888&view=all&tid=0&guest=1

So, I should probably stop where I am at for now and forget about panamahatsdirect.com for now and figure out what I really want to do with my lid collection going forward.

Thanks,

Brian

If you want to minimize your usage of those "hard earned $'s" try getting something from Panama Bob on ebay.

I am not exactly sure what relation the hats he sells there have to the ones in his standard store, but I just got one, and it is great, and dealing with him was a pleasure.

panama hats direct

I bought a hat from panama hats direct, they shipped it from Ecuador, nice hat, leather sweat band. Has held up well over the past 2-3 seasons, a Montichristie.

I wore it into Myer's hat shop in New Orleans two years ago, I was looking for a hatband. [Not impressed with the standard black hat band that came with the hat.] Old man Myer had all of his staff come over and inspect the hat while he lectured them on the quality of the hat, he was impressed.

If their link is broken hunt around, they are still in business as I get emails from them, rec'd one last week in fact.

Thanks for the info 4spurs. Sounds like it was a good investment for you. Making me think about checking these out too! I don't think one can really have too many hats can they?

Lovely little store. I've been there. Their store has a vintage vibe yet they only sell wool felt hats (mostly stingies) and very inexpensive straws.
