also DeadPanDiva's contribution also reminded me of this one:

Mein Leben ist ein Pilgrimstand,
ich reise nach dem Vaterland,
nach dem Jerusalem, das droben.
Gott selbst als eine feste Stadt
auf Bundesblut gegründet hat;
da werd ich meinen Gott stets loben.
Mein Leben ist ein Pilgrimstand,
ich reise nach dem Vaterland

My days on earth pass swiftly by,
I'm travelling to my home on high,
Jerusalem in glory folden,
whose walls are founded by our God,
Cemented in the covenant's blood,
And now arrayed in robes of golden,
My days on earth pass swiftly by,
I'm travelling to my home on high.

I like the song The Quest from Man of La Mancha, used to sing it when I was feeling down and out, it lifted my spirits.

John Lennon's Imagine is another favorite. And Let It Be, another good one, they can play it at my wake, if I have one.

Nights in White Satin, when I am feeling nostalgic about my early years in New York City.

Probably lots more, I just can't think of them, now. Lots of them from the women's music that appeared in the 1970's when I was in the movement in New York, no one here would know them.

Also lots of blues and folk songs I love to sing; I feel they somehow are a part of me.

I love this one! For a TV theme song, Laverne & Shirley definitely hit the nail on the head!

I used that and "Man of La Mancha" for the same purpose when I was stuck in Okinawa. For some inexplicable reason, other Marines looked at me funny when I walked down the street on base singing about defying and challenging the "bleak and unbearable world."

The Wino And I Know....

The ice cream man, he's a hillbilly fan
Got seventy-eights by Hank Snow
Walks down the street, shufflin' his feet
To a rhythm that only he knows

And I've seen him in so many places
I saw him the night I was born
In a Bourbon Street bar, I received my first scar
From an old man so tattered and torn

Chorus:
And the wino and I know the pain of street singin'
Like a door-to-door salesman knows the pains of bell ringin'
Strange situation, wild occupation
Livin' my life like a song

Coffee is strong at the Cafe Du Monde
Donuts are too hot to touch
Just like a fool, when those sweet goodies cool
I eat til I eat way too much

'cause Im livin' on things that excite me
Be they pastry or lobster or love
Im just tryin' to get by bein' quiet and shy
In a world full of pushin' and shove

Chorus:
And the wino and I know the pain of back bustin'
Like the farmer knows the pain of his pickup truck rustin'
Strange situation, wild occupation
Livin my life like a song

Sweet senorita won't you please come with me
Back to the island, honey, back to the sea
Back to the only place that I want to be...

Chorus:
And the wino and I know the joy of the ocean
Like a boy knows the joy of his milkshake in motion
Strange situation, wild occupation
Livin' my life like a song
Yes its a strange situation, a wild occupation
Livin' my life like a song

I'm Old Fashioned

I am not such a clever one
About the latest fads
I admit I was never one
Adored by local lads

Not that I ever try to be a saint
I'm the type that they classify as quaint

I'm old fashioned
I love the moonlight
I love the old fashioned things

The sound of rain
Upon a window pane
The starry song that April sings

This year's fancies
Are passing fancies
But sighing sighs, holding hands
These my heart understands

I know I'm old fashioned
But I don't mind it
That's how I want to be
As long as you agree
To stay old fashioned with me

(bridge)

I'm old fashioned
But I don't mind it
That's how I want to be
As long as you agree
To stay old fashioned with me

Oh won't you stay old fashioned with me
Oh please stay old fashioned with me

And if you want to see & hear it performed by Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth, click here... I've often thought it should be in the running for Fedora Lounge theme song whenever those posts periodically pops up.

Good Enough For Granddad - Squirrel Nut Zippers

If it's good enough for Grandad
it's good enough for me.
The way it was
that's the way it's got to be.

Told me all about the good times that he had.
Even when the times were sad
Was good enough for Grandad.

Been to all kinds of places;
been to every old foreign land.
Ain't a man alive
shuck and jive
better than Grandad can.

All the good times that he had
They were good enough for Grandad
They're good enough for me.

Been to all kinds of places;
been to every old foreign land.
Ain't a man alive
shuck and jive
better than Grandad can. (Uh uh)

All the good times that he had
even when the times were sad
was good enough for grandad

(Yes yes)

All the good times that he had
If they were good enough for Grandad
they're good enough for me

(Yes yes)

Tomorrow's Gonna Be Another Day
Its a fine tune by Charlie Daniels.

...so tell that man I won't be back,
to lay no more of his railroad track,
I got little green weeds growin' 'round my shack,
I keep my money in a gunny sack.

I'm never going to be a millionaire
So pass me over 'cause I don't care
I'll sit right back in my easy chair all day.

Tomorrow
To-morrow
Tomorrow is gonna be another day. (repeat)

I second "Imagine" and I love "Instant Karma" and "Across the Universe" as well. I suppose they appeal to my idealistic, spiritual, cosmic side.

In terms of a song that characterizes who I am every day that's a tough one though for some reason "Stormy Weather" is often in my head and I hum it daily.

The First Hundred years

It's a great life, if you don't weaken
It's a great world, if you don't weaken
If you don't lose heart,
the hardest part
is the first hundred years

It's a great life with a kick to it
Yes, a great life if you stick to it
If you come up strong,
it won't be long
Until the sunshine appears

If you
let him biff you,
Mr. Gloom will knock you cold
Get him
Never let him
Use his well-known stranglehold

It's a great life if you don't weaken
Yes a great life if you won't weaken
If you do, oh well,
what the heck
It's still a great life!
;)

As I was just telling Miss1929 a few days ago after she sang it, I always wanted to be the man that the woman was singing about in the song "The Man I Love." Being that man was my philosophy of life.

However, the first time I really listened to the song was when I got a record by an industrial ensemble called World of Skin, a side project of the classic early industrial band The Swans. World of Skin did a haunted, gloomy version of it, sung by Jarboe, their female singer. This version includes an intro: "When the mellow moon begins to gleam, every night a dream a little dream, and of course Prince Charming is the theme."

Imagine - John Lennon

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Shores of California--The Dresden Dolls

he’s been trying with limited success
to get this girl let him get into her dress
but every time he thinks he’s getting close
she threatens death before he gets a chance

and that’s the way it is in Minnesota
that’s the way it is in Oklahoma
that’s the way it’s been since protozoa
first climbed onto the shores of California

she’s been trying with limited success
to get him to turn out the lights and dance
cause like any girl all she really wants
is that fickle little bitch romance
that fickle little bitch romance

and that is why a girl is called a tease
and that is why a guy is called a sleaze
and that’s why god made escort agencies
one life to live and mace and GHB

and that’s the way it is in Minnesota
that’s the way it is in Oklahoma homa
that’s the way since the animals and Noah
first climbed onto shores of California

must not be too kind
stop thinking love is blind
clench your fists, yeah right
"she's just not my type"

why all these conflicting specifications
maybe to prevent overpopulation
all I know is that all around the nation
the girls are cryin' the boys are masturbatin’
the girls are cryin’ the boys are masturbatin’

and that’s the way it is in Minnesota
that’s the way it is in Oklahoma homa
that’s the way Aristophanes and Homer
wrote the Illiad and Lysistrata

that’s the way it is in Minnesota
that’s the way it is in Oklahoma homa
that’s the way since the age protozoa
first climbed onto the shores of California

Someday my day will come, I'll hold true love right in my hand,
I'll touch the pretty rainbows end and my cup will overflow.
Someday my day will come, I'll watch my ship as it comes in,
my castles won't be made of sand, someday my day will come.

G F C G
Stake my future on a hell of a past
G F C G
Looks like tomorrow is a coming on fast
G F C G
Ain't complaining about what I got
G F C G
Seen better times but who has not.

Silvio silver and gold
Won't buy back the beat of a heart grown cold
Silvio I gotta go
Find out something only dead men know.

Honest as the next jade rolling that stone
When I come and knockin' don't throw me no bone
I'm an old boll weevil looking for a home
If you don't like it you can leave me alone.

I can snap my fingers and require the rain
From a clear blue sky and turn it off again
I can stroke your body and relieve your pain
And charm the whistle off an evening train.

Silvio silver and gold
Won't buy back the beat of a heart grown cold
Silvio I gotta go
Find out something only dead men know

Give what I got until I got no more
I take what I get until I even the score
You know I love you and further more
When it is time to go you got an open door.

I can tell your fancy I can tell your plain
You give something up for ev'rything you gain
Since ev'ry pleasure's got an edge of pain
Pay for your ticket and don't complain.

One of these days and it won't be long
Going down the valley and sing my song
I will sing it loud and sing it strong
Let the echo decide if I was right or wrong.

Silvio silver and gold
Won't buy back the beat of a heart grown cold
Silvio I gotta go
Find out something only dead men know.

That's How Young I Feel (from Mame)

I have the feeling that time has halted,
I'd like two straws and a choc'late malted,
'Cause that's how young I feel.
I feel like peckin' and bunny huggin'
And Lindy hoppin' and jitterbuggin'
'Cause that's how young I feel.
I'm mad for that big band beat,
Wanna ride in a rumble seat.
(Sheldon's got the Chevvy)
Love a faceful of frozen custard,
To have a hot dog with sand and mustard,
And ride the Ferris wheel,
Oh, honey,
'Cause that's how young I feel.
I'm ready to ask my mom,
Can I go to the Junior Prom.
(Sheldon's got the Chevvy)
Want a coonskin to knock about with,
To start each mornin' by givin' out
With a Rudy Vallee squeal,
Oh, honey,
'Cause that's how young I feel.

I find I'm faced with that old sensation,
Will life go on after graduation,
'Cause that's how young I feel.
I'd love to cheer at a football rally
And swap sorority pins with Sally,
'Cause that's how young I feel.
Love a faceful of frozen custard,
To have a hot dog with sand and mustard,
And ride the Ferris wheel,
Oh, honey,
'Cause that's how young I feel.
Young I feel
Young I feel
Young I feel
That's how young
How young, yeah, I feel!

Kris Kristofferson - The Pilgrim; Chapter 33

The Pilgrim; Chapter 33 lyrics

See him wasted on the sidewalk in his jacket and his jeans,
Wearin' yesterday's misfortunes like a smile--
Once he had a future full of money, love, and dreams,
Which he spent like they was goin' outa style--
And he keeps right on a'changin' for the better or the worse,
Searchin' for a shrine he's never found--
Never knowin' if believin' is a blessin' or a curse,
Or if the goin' up was worth the comin' down--
CHORUS:
He's a poet, he's a picker--
He's a prophet, he's a pusher--
He's a pilgrim and a preacher, and a problem when he's stoned--
He's a walkin' contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction,
Takin' ev'ry wrong direction on his lonely way back home.

He has tasted good and evil in your bedrooms and your bars,
And he's traded in tomorrow for today--
Runnin' from his devils, Lord, and reachin' for the stars,
And losin' all he's loved along the way--
But if this world keeps right on turnin' for the better or the worse,
And all he ever gets is older and around--
>From the rockin' of the cradle to the rollin' of the hearse,
The goin' up was worth the comin' down--

There's a lotta wrong directions on that lonely way back home
