P&O was the famous shipping line and the style seemed to look like an ocean liner. Hence the style was called P&O style. Basically it is late Aussie Art Deco or an Aussie version of the early Moderne style.

Australia was slow to absorb contemporary architectural styles due to the "tyranny of distance".

In the 1850s they were still using (fortunately) the Georgian style despite the fact it was already finished.

The California Bungalow of the 20s/30s used the Arts and Crafts style extensively which had evolved in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
