Dark brown goat, chocolate steer and russet horse for those of you who are contemplating a jacket from them. Of these three the steer is the thickest, next is the goat and thinnest is the horse (but only just).

The steer is quite stretchy, the goat not, and the horse supple and easily creased.

Their horse is cut to the 3oz spec. weight for flight jackets. The goat samples I received were on par with the horse. As for the steer, it comes from leather originally intended for other uses and is not the 3oz weight. One must also keep in mind that samples are taken from the leftover bits & pieces and, therefore, may be much thicker or thinner than the leather from a which a jacket is cut. Samples are still good for determining color, grain, and wear characteristics.

I recently got some samples from Amanda as well, man that leather smells gorgeous. Anyways, I found that the horsehide esepecially the front quarter was not as thick as as I had anticipated. I then emailed Mark who explained that the samples were probably left over pieces from other jackets which do not represent the true thickness of the leathers available (like you said in your post)

As for the thickness of the leathers I was quoted minimum 4oz thickness by Mark Moye- so there`s a little confusion going on.

I am about to order a black front quarter horsehide Highwayman, but I am just weighing up the samples at present. Will post up some pictures of the samples soon. Naturally I`m going to go for the thickest FQHH possible.
