The loss of physical books is one of my sadnesses. In the city in which I live there are about 400,000 people, but for the entire city we have one remaining bookstore in one of the shopping center... But who needs books when you have the internet?

Bookies, one of my favorite haunts currently closed may not reopen after Covid; so, I will adjust, adapt,
and make the terrain work to my advantage. Amazon Books and internet convenience compensate,
and being an apartment cliff dweller oft on the daily hunt I have literary selects sent to a UPS box address.
Professional and personal usage dictate technology of course but a book in hand, pawing pages, marking
margins up, scribbling criticism with other vandal is more enjoyable reading.

“Technology to automatically scan all iPhones”. The intent sounds admirable (to scan for child abuse content). Yet experts warn that it is a slippery slope.

"Instead of having targeted capabilities such as to wiretap communications with a warrant and to perform forensics on seized devices, the agencies' direction of travel is the bulk scanning of everyone's private data, all the time, without warrant or suspicion.“

Well, that and the lack of nude photos, but once you've seen one nekkid Grandma you've pretty much seen 'em all.
How sheltered a life I lead, the only nekkid grandma that I have ever seen was Joan Collins, in "The Bitch." And she wasn't even a Grandma then, although she was forty-six. Mind you , I've seen many a nekkid Grandma letting it all hang out on the Spanish Costa beaches. I'm with my missus on that one. The older you get, the more you should cover it up.

One thing I've noticed throughout my life is that I've generally been mostly attracted to women who were approximately my age, give or take, say, five years. As such, when I was in my twenties I was attracted to twenty-somethings, in my thirties it was thirty-somethings, and so on. Now that I'm 60, the same holds true, so if I weren't married and were lucky enough to see a woman nekkid, odds are she'd be a Grandma, so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but forums like The Lounge are simply earlier forms of social media, a stage of their evolution. The only real differences are that "forums" are usually targeted towards a specific subject matter and, as such, have a smaller membership base. Well, that and the lack of nude photos, but once you've seen one nekkid Grandma you've pretty much seen 'em all.

The big difference I find is social media as now understood is much more ephemeral. This forum, and others like it, provides a repository of knowledge. There are several Facebook groups which also have provided me some great information on similar stuff as we discuss on TFL - but the problem is if I don't screenshot it there and then, the chances of me ever finding it again are slim to none. Social media has its purpose, but the notion that it can really take over from forums is bunk.

That thing wouldn't last five minutes in any house with a cat.

If I could only find a company who'd sell me cheap enough drones, there's an idea for a youtube channel that would fund my retirement. CATS-VERSUS-DRONES. Even better than zombie versus shark.

You're right, and the impermanence of modern social media is an issue I had momentarily overlooked. I'm not sure if that impermanence was intentional or merely a by-product of our current "instant gratification" society, but if anyone discovers information anywhere on the Internet that's important to them they had better take responsibility for securing and storing it themselves because there is no guarantee it will be there later.

When I was a kid, adolescent, older women in their twenties, thirties, forties were my choice.
This continued consistently. When I was in service I was stationed in Thessalonikki, Greece, a metro town
with lots of women in their late twenties, thirties, and forties on the prowl. This was just after the war
and I was on a volunteer one-year assignment, which I requested be extended for another year-extended
my time in the Army too, I was having a blast. My commanding officer, a strict by the book West Pointer
told me the group commander wanted an explanation as to why I put the request in, since I was the only
guy who ever did that-none of the other guys in my detachment were running the town like me, so I
guess I was something of a solitary target. I told the captain frankly what the reason was, he was aghast,
but I insisted on the facts, just the facts. Sometime later, the colonel came up for a visit, and by mere
coincidence we ran into each other at the airport. I was flying down to Athens to catch a military flight
up to Germany to see a buddy for a few days. When we arrived in Athens the colonel offered me a ride
to the airbase in his limousine. He liked my explanation as to why I extended.:D

Age has never been a factor for me. The most important part is "feeling" an attraction, and some sort of "chemistry".

Some guys will fixate over something physical - like eyes. I have a friend who is attracted to green eyes. As he says, "dragon green eyes, like creamy pools of jade".

Sure. I like eyes. I like it when a girl has two eyes. As in both intact. I don't go for that glass eye. It makes me feel like I'm dating Sammy Davis, Jr. And I do discriminate. I will not date a girl with an eye patch. I won't be seen in public with a pirate. I don't want people asking me if she has a wooden leg.

Age has never been a factor for me.

Maybe not initially, but I think that later on age differences inevitably become an issue, if not problematic, in small ways. At least it did for me. My wife is 10 years younger than I am, and we just don't have the same interests in some areas. Sadly in some areas that are very meaningful to me.

The most important part is "feeling" an attraction, and some sort of "chemistry"

There's probably something to that. As opposed to a relationship developing out of a friendship, in which case he likelihood would seem pretty high that the relationship as it ages would revert back to just a friendship, if not merely a tolerance.

Is The Fedora Lounge going to be part of the soon-coming Metaverse??? I can’t wait to hang out with all y’all in a place that, I assume, will be like the Playboy Mansion. Only, instead of bunnies, it will be populated by grouchy old people. :) What will your avatar wear? I go back and forth between a Fedora hat and an Aloha shirt… or the country gentleman look in a nice tweed.

Metawha???
According to Wiki, the metaverse is the hypothesised next iteration of the internet, supporting decentralised, persistent online 3-D virtual environments. This virtual space will be accessible through virtual reality headsets, augmented reality glasses, smartphones, PCs, and game consoles.
Maybe you got it right, Metawha??? (shorthand for gibberish.) Didn't Facebook announce they are to become Meta something or other. Doubt if they will give up their habits of keeping tabs on us just yet.

In other words, the de-evolution of humankind continues unabated. Lesser living through technology thanks to people like Mark Suckerbet! o_O

Apparently MZ is doubling down on the Metaverse. Says Facebook will invest TEN BILLION in the project this year and much more in years to follow. He has built into the plan the fact that it will lose money for several years before turning the corner. Is the Metaverse a harbinger of the future? Or more hot air? If he is really investing that much money in it, perhaps I should reserve judgment.

BTW, that “He’s not your dad” crack made me snort up my coffee. Good one!

Metaverse is so yesterday.

Now we’ve got something new to worry about: “the quantum apocalypse” (QA). What is the QA? In short, it is estimated that in 10 to 15 years, quantum computers will be available and they will be so fast and powerful that all encryption safeguards will become worthless; thus putting everything from national security to your bank account at high risk. Evil hackers and evil governments will run riot, destroying civilization as we know it. :)

I have been around long enough that I habitually take dire “the end Is near” predictions with a grain of salt. Won’t quantum computers also be capable of creating hack-proof security? I mean, sure, it will be a never ending computing arms race. But don’t we have that already?
