On our farm, surrounded by other farms and sugar bush and trees, there are places and times where raking is necessary, as the accumulation is too great. They would kill the grass and leave the area as mush.

Otherwise we simply mulch with the tractor mower, leaving the debris as fertilizer.

This being California ("What ain't fruits and nuts is flakes") we have our fair share of tree hugging Prius drivers who move at the speed of "snail", but around here the people who truly have no business at the helm of a motor vehicle are the Minivan drivers. In the last 20 years I've seen only four Minivan drivers who knew how to drive one of those people movers; all of the rest were completely clueless and shouldn't have been allowed out in public without some form of supervisor.

Then you call electrician. He got the analog order, but he doesn't already got the order in the system, so he can't give you a date and also he must check, if there's a free date the next days. So he have to call you back...

One thing, that is absolutely astonishing or even fascinating, at least in Germany!

There are still many people, drinking the classic german filter-bag-coffee, equally if machine-brewed or manual. Even young people still do this!

YUCK!! What's wrong with their gustatory nerves?
I mean, come on, every industrial brewed instant coffee tastes better, not to mention simple mug-brewed "coffee turkish".

The classic german filter coffee just tastes bad by its system, you can do what you want. The water touches the coffee much too long AND you got the taste of the filter bag in you coffee. Still evil combination.
My grandaunt gave us the brown brakish water, when we visit her. But you can't blame a 88 yo, of course.

Now that winter is coming and it's dark at 430 in the afternoon it's time for my annual rant against fashionable idiots of all ages who insist on jaywalking poorly-lit neighborhood streets while dressed from head to toe in black. The dark face masks this year add an even more annoying touch.

When I'm dictator, black, navy blue, or dark brown garments will be allowed after sunset only with strips of luminous tape at least two inches wide and eight inches long attached to both the front and back. And headlamps will be strongly encouraged.

I almost hit a woman doing this while making my way home from work on Friday night. She was crossing the street in the neighborhood, and I saw her ONLY because of the reflective material on her gym shoes.

Almost took out a guy on a bike last week for the same reason. Only reflector was on one of his pedals and you couldn't see it 99% of the time. Thankfully, a residential street and low speed.

A couple years ago during the week between Christmas and New Years the lovely missus and I were making our way home from downtown during rush hour when we, along with all the other users on that crowded road, made way for an aid car as best we could.

Shortly after the aid car squeezed by us it stopped at the reason for the its being there — an unconscious young woman lying on the pavement. The medics had her on a backboard in a matter of seconds and into the vehicle and got on their way.

We learned the next day that the young woman, an 18-year-old named Dominique Amos, had died from her injuries. She had crossed the road mid-block and was struck by two cars, one of which left the scene but its driver later ID’ed himself to the authorities.

Only 18, dead from crossing the road after dark where she didn’t have the right of way.

I’ve done things riskier than that without suffering so much as a scratch, and I’m guessing most of us here have as well. But sooner or later ...

It's no better on our side of the pond. Yesterday evening, about half past five, I just caught sight of a cyclist, no lights, he was wearing all black or very dark clothing, nothing like a reflector, just sheer luck and good fortune that he didn't become another statistic. It really shook me up, but the cyclist seemed oblivious.

As we’ve observed before, we ask the roads to accommodate more uses than they safely can. We do try to minimize those hazards, to no small degree of success, as traffic has gotten generally safer over the decades, for various reasons.

Still, bicycles and pedestrians sharing the same patch of pavement with cars and trucks is inherently dangerous. I don’t have to be told that truly solving the problem (grade separation, etc.) comes at a steeper price than we’re willing to pay, and is darned nigh impossible in many contexts.

Maybe the dumbest thing I ever saw in my life was just now -- a kid dressed in black rolling skating down the street in the middle of the road in the gathering dusk. And by kid I mean "probably old enough to know better."

Why must cars, when they pass you on the highway seemingly swerve into you? I swear the other day on my way home from work one car came little more than an inch from my driver's side mirror as it passed me.
