Last time I went to the dentist was about a month ago. And I opted for a tiny pill & everything went fine .

The last time I had Novocain was in 1966. The rookie 2nd lieutenant gave me 6 shots of Novocain & it was very bad experience.
The jerk kept poking me to determine if the area was numb. It was still painful. I told him to give it time for the Novocain to take
effect. But he wouldn’t listen. Too many GIs waiting.
Afterwards in the barracks the whole side of my face & shoulder area was numbed for hours.

The second time, another rookie did a bad clean-up job of my front teeth that later cause an infection which was so swollen I had to have my
front tooth removed. Sad because there was no cavity on my tooth , just a poor job of cleaning.
I opted for gas instead of the shots which I went to a private dentist instead of the military.

Too bad you had such a bad experience, but the military dentists and physicians can be pretty brutal. They are on an assembly line schedule so it's "come on soldier sit and take it". They are officers and you a lowly enlisted man so you've got to follow orders. Most if not all post service dentists end up teaching as they say "if you can't do it you teach it".
As for the infection after cleaning, sounds like due to your understandable fear regular brushing and maintenance is not a high priority as an infection as violent as yours exemplifies. I wouldn't doubt your teeth have some mobility and have infection present around them and the cleaning brought the infection to the forefront which explains why it was removed. I would hope that with all the problems you have you would have all your remaining teeth removed and have false teeth placed which would eliminate your fears and pains.

My first dentist as a kid was an ex-WW2 Army dentist. I was able to survive him, and still have quite a bit of his metalwork in my molars, but my sister was terrified of him -- which wasn't helped by the fact that he slapped her for fussing once too often. Yeah see what I mean. Still thought he was in the military barking orders. The problem with him is if he went into teaching he'd possibly have passed on bad behavior like slapping a child further contributing to a generation of dentalphobes.

I hate the dentist. As in, the dentist is the only doctor I actually fear going to, and I see lots of doctors who could give me horrific news worse than having my teeth worked on. I have good teeth (very few fillings- maybe 5 or so) considering all the things I have been put through that rot your teeth.

My mother was a dental assistant in the 1960s for what would be today a dental surgeon (as opposed to a regular dentist). She later went on to work with the first dental program at the local developmental center in the 1970s with several skilled dental surgeons. Because of the quality of the dentists she worked for and the fact that the patients at the end of her careerhad never had dental care (and some of these patients were in their 60s and had been institutionalized since they were toddlers) I heard some horror stories about what can happen to your teeth without proper care.

I'm glad you're able to still go and sacrifice to go. And it's great you make your daughter's experience a lot better than your past experiences, only I know fear is definitly not a great motivator. Kudos to you

I do really try with my daughter, and I appreciate you recognizing that. They have a train table at the pediatric dentist (we now live an hour away from but still travel to) but I make sure to take her at least 15 minutes early and we play until they are ready to take us. I don't want us to be rushed as that will increase her anxiety and she has a strong association with dentist = train. (I remind her of this and we talk about how nice it is to have clean teeth.)

I can't imagine choosing to be a pediatric dentist. It is thankless work, but I am so thankful that the bigger city has one because she is SO GOOD with my daughter. Otherwise our "adult" dentist won't see her until 3, and that reeks of causing children anxiety.

Misunderstood what you were saying, I apologize, but I don't appreciate what you are saying in regards to my personal oral hygiene. From the information you gave it sounded like a very serious problem to which I am very understanding, but to have you attack me in such a way without asking me if I had similar problems is unconscionable. And I believe you live in Tartarus and not the Elysian Fields.

Sounds like you found a very good dentist for your daughter. I just hope you found an equally good one for yourself.

As I do yours. As per The Elysian Fields, as you are uncertain as to what Tartarus can be compared to, I can only believe that your place of residence is New York State, and your reference to The Elysian Fields is geographic. If you are speaking mythological which I am uncertain, I can only tell you that no I don't have any direct knowledge of Tartarus nor The Elysian fields. What I can tell you categorically that I am well acquainted with Valhalla (and I don't mean New York) a place I know and believe I will be welcomed when it is time.

For those not schooled in Greek Mythology, most all human souls went to the Hades. There they were judged and placed in one of three worlds. The Elysian Fields were for those who were good in life. Asphodel Meadows was a place where the neither good nor bad went, and was a very dull place. All bad souls went to Tartarus to be tortured.

This is the "official" definition.
