Smooth gentlemen

Just out of curiosity, ladies, what do you consider smooth in a gentleman? I have no ulterior motives for asking; I just heard a lady call someone smooth today (in a strictly ironic tone) and that set me to wondering.

I wouldn't appreciate smarmy or oily smoothness. But I work with a Polish gentleman in his early sixties who always kisses ladies' hands when he first meets them. I remember feeling a bit taken aback when I met him, but I have since learned to admire that old-world courtliness.

What about you ladies?

Smoothness to me is a bitting wit cast with exceptional delivery. If a man can issue a comeback that can be humorous as well as insightful, Im done.

Courtesy and manners. I was leaving a group of friends at a pub once and as I said goodbye most people just remained sitting and waved. One man (I didn't really know him well at all) stood up to say goodbye and gave me a peck on the cheek. I know that was done out of manners and not any romantic reason! That made a huge impression on me possibly because of the contrast to others' behaviour.

Also, at a barbecue with coworkers, I was putting the food we'd brought in the fridge and getting drinks when I looked out of the window and saw my husband meeting all these people he'd not met before (he knew no one there). Within minutes, and before I'd even got back outside, he was laughing and joking with everyone and had them in the palm of his hand.

Those are two stand out moments of smoothness for me.

Smooth to me would be when a gentleman either says something complimentary or acts in a chivalrous way, but all of it is in an unaffected manner. It should be genuine and sincere, otherwise it's the wrong kind of "smooth."
I must say, guys who brag about being smooth (or smooth-talkers) almost never are.
