So, with the smoking question, roughly established. My next question is what features would you look for if you were getting one made for you? Any particular or special pockets?

Uh, not all of us think he is respectable. :eusa_doh: My opinion of him is pretty much spot on with yours.

Oh, I figured that that might not be the case round here ... .... but while certainly no prude (for one thing, I'm fairly well known as a 'face' punter in certain corners of the UK noveau-burlesque community!), it never ceases to amaze me that what is, essentially, a smutty porn mag and its owner are so celebrated as part of the mainstream while at the same time - and very often by the same people - the rest of the pornography industry is so looked down on. I just don't get the disconnect - the power of branding, perhaps?

What he wears now really isn't a smoking jacket. It is more like a robe.

That's true, he's more into the longer line jackets..... makes sense to me, as he also spend most of (all?) his time in silk pyjamas.

I had one from Hong Kong in green silk that I bought while on a WESTPAC cruise in the Navy. Had it for years and used it as it was meant. My (now long ago ex-) wife and I threw formal dinner parties for 12 and us gents would retire to smoke cubans (there a some benefits of sailing the high seas!) and our pipes while cracking out the good port wine. Smoking jackets were much more comfortable to lounge in than dinner jackets, especially as the stories got wilder and the hand and arms started swinging wildly to emphasize some obscure point or another.

The ladies retired to the drawing room for tea and chat about, well, uh, umm, whatever it is that ladies chat about. We gents always assumed it was about us but that might just be our collective conceit.

Sadly, the dear old jacket has gone astray in the many, many moves required of military life. Next time I'm back in Hong Kong, I'll aquire another for the odd cigar.

I would have it made of a heavy silk brocade. You have to have the obligatory pockets with the trimmings. Depending on where you smoke etc, the lining could be quilted for cool places or silk lined for warmer weather. I like the tie with tassels but a two button would be fine as well. Two inside pockets would be nice---for cigars and the odd flask.
Don't forget a smoking cap of complementary color.

My girlfriend got me this smoking jacket / dressing gown. Found it at a thrift store.

I think its wool felt with quilted silk collars.

Now 'that' is one lovely jacket. That girl must really love you! You do realise the next purchase has just got to be a smoking cap! I'm currently getting one made by a lady who hand-makes them in the US (A little cottage industry project of hers). Once it's made and delivered, and I am happy with it, then I'll release details.

I got out Dad's old smoking jacket last night. Las Vegas temperature was in the low 60's, so I sat on the patio and smoked a cigar. I had not thought about the smoking jacket for years, so thanks for bringing them up.

Sorry if this was discussed earlier in the thread... but back in the era when it was common to host such parties where one would don a smoking jacket, were the guests expected to come with their own jackets?

I am thinking that surely no host, no matter how generous, could foresee the shapes and sizes of his guests, or be expected to have such a number of spare jackets on hand, no?

Usually the host of the party would be wearing a smoking jacket whilst the guests would wear their own suits. Not smoking jackets.

I have a feeling that wearing a smoking jacket pretty much means that you're the man of the house. Of course I can be wrong and the guests could wear them too.

But when you're going to someones party I feel that it would be rude to wear a smoking jacket... [huh]

Pyjamas with dressing gown is good.
But why exactly, are we wearing Pyjamas with the smoking jacket?
What is the reason for this combination?
