I tend to find exotic hides underwhelming for the price they tend to demand. I handled some of the Kudu Aero offered back in the day, and it was kind of spongy, very mottled and streaked, and in some cases heavily scarred (Kudu have a tendency to rub up against barbed wire etc), making it hard to match up panel-wise.

A guy who works for me had a crocodile vest made in Thailand for about $400. He wears it on his bike which also has a custom made crocodile skin seat. The vest looks more wearable than a jacket but is all for show. Of course he rides a tricked up Harley with all the adornments.
Whole kangaroo pelts are sold in most big markets over here. They are popular with tourists. Some are quite huge. A grown man could sleep on one. They would make excellent panels for grizzly jackets as the fur is quite short, dense, very soft and tactile.

Now THAT would be something to see. I like that idea quite a bit actually. Good thinking!!

I saw this one too. The roo was just laughing it off. Didn't even phase him. They're actually incredibly bad ass giant, steroid fueled dog/mice that could shred a dude with those claws. I dig them.

The scarring was an aesthetic thing but the matching was a nightmare for the cutters with lots of wastage, which as far as I know is why not many jackets were made and hide abandoned - it took a lot of hides to make a few jackets. It was also a rather odd leather as it was kind of 'spongy', though whether it affected it resilience, I've no idea. It was also more expensive at the time - this was at the end of the original regime when mods were free, so the extra cost was surprising at the time. That said, I see the jackets still demand $500-upwards on eBay. In terms of colouring, Kangaroo is similar in colour but has far nicer hand and general look.

I'm surprised that you never hear about calfskin being used in jackets. It's the preferred leather for high end dress shoes - more supple than cowhide, and much, much more durable than lambskin - which would never be used in shoes.

Also, Buffalo and Bison are not the same thing. Buffalo leather usually comes from Asian Water Buffalos, Bison leather comes from... well... Bison.

I admire the vast majority of JL's creations, but that thing is genuinely hideous (I'm confident the customer dictated that abomination).
