There's also the trick of putting a moist hat (damp sweat band and misted hat) on a lampshade, well above the bulb, with the light on for an hour, maybe a little more. That seems to bring the hat down a size or two.

... this works... for a less drastic approach there exist both felt & adhesive foam sizing strips... or just fold up a couple of fin$ & tuck them beneath your sweat!

I just did the Lampshade trick last week and it worked great, I only left it on the lamp for 15 min. and was surprised how well it worked so I would be careful about leaving it on the heat for too long.
I already have 5 Akubra hats, all size 59 and they all fit perfectly right out of the box but last week I received a new Banjo Paterson, also size 59 and it was so big that the only thing holding up the hat was my ears.
I don't know if the hat tag was wrong or if this is normal and I've been lucky in the past.
