^ Thanks so much for posting photos of that old Swiss backpack. It never ceases to amaze me that various European armies issued similar packs made from fur-out hides, as late as WW2. It seems so Napoleonic, except over a century later!
just thought I'd mention was looking for a vintage rucksack for walking purposes and came across this delightful thread so I'm now eagerly awaiting the arrival of my swiss Tonrister cowhide pack; it was a toss up between that and the also Swiss smaller salt and pepper pack whuch i might also get (perhaps for summer use) if I see one available in good condition.
