So sweet! I love this type of little hat. They seem to be half hat/half headband and look great with sleek styles. When I had longer hair these looked brilliant with a low chignon. With super short I just pop it on.

Yeah, I have a pretty difficult time figuring out what to do with my hair under hats. I actually managed to get my hair into a little bun that day, but I didn't notice that little hair tendril hanging out until later.

For me, it's not a matter of my ability to create interesting styles within the confines of the hat design, but a matter of time and practicality. I don't have time to fiddle with my hair in front of a mirror before work. I'm often running straight from a gym class to my dorm to work, all within half an hour, with most of that time is spent sponging off quickly, hydrating and getting dressed. I'll spend five minutes maximum fixing my hair and makeup.

I resemble that lack of time comment.lol
Actually,I like your fallen tendril. Your hair is perfect for these types of hats.Even if you just tucked your hair behind your ears it would still look adorable. The bonus of having your cute cut is you don't need much prep time.

Wow ladies, you look stunning in your hats!

I've been posting over in the What Hat Are You Wearing Todayhat thread for a while, so if you don't mind, I'll start cross-posting here too, so there is a record of hats for persons who are looking for reference information. If you've seen these before, please skip, with my apologies.

Cheers-

This is a unique 1920's cloche with soutache embroidery and a fantastic interior label (note the arrow with the word FRONT), deco-era ribbon treatment and the banded sewing on the brim. I took a lot of pictures because I assumed people watching this thread would be interested in the details.

I have severe hat envy. I have an Edwardian style riding jacket that would look lovely with this!

Yes! Thank you for posting the close ups - it won't come as a newsflash when I say I'm madly in love with it.

I'm keeping an eye out for darker cloches at the moment - I have a black capeline and a dark brown small brimmed cloche, but I'd like a nice, neat, close fitting black one - perhaps a "skull". I have a few straw and horsehair ones...need to photograph them properly.

Here's a new addition - I'm looking a bit bedraggled as I'd just arrived home, found it waiting for me, and plonked it on my head for a photo. It had a few bits and bobs for trim - straw soutache embellishement, a silk applique in a sort of deco pleat, some velvet flowers and odds and ends. Not too loud, but some of these colours will go well with a few of my day dresses.

I was wondering what was over your hair? Is it a hair net with pearls? If so where did you get that?

Wow-Mojito, that's a stunning cloche. What type of condition is it in?
Dd you get it off ebay?

It's a pearled hair net, circa 1930 or so. I took it out of the package the first time to wear it for a dinner meeting with a Lounge member. I don't remember where I got it; but probably got it 15-20 years ago. There's some discussion about pearled snoods if you look it up, where I post additional pictures and some info on where to buy knitted snoods.

More great hats, Vintage Betty! I've never seen one from the 20s in that style you have above, although I have seen some beret style hats from the era that aren't too dissimilar (in photographs, at least). What would would you say was your earliest piece of headwear?

Yes, it was an ebay purchase - one I'd forgotten I'd put a snipe on. Great condition, just a split on the crown (unnoticeable - it doesn't gape) and the ribbon you see running around the bring has just a weeeee bit of shattering. Otherwise in very good nick.

Love your new avatar, btw.

Actually, I thought they were pretty common (And low-priced) for the working class woman? I'll see if I can pull some advertisements to support my theory.

My earliest hat I believe is from the early 1800's (It may be later). I have refrained from showing any pre-1920 hats. Is that something the ladies of this thread would also like to see?

You seem to have exquisite taste Ms. Mojito, and I noticed you seem to purchase only high-end items - good for you! I have purchased many low end items, and am finally seeing the errors of my ways. Do you back the split at all? Or leave it as is?

Thank you so much! Me in an earlier time - many years younger and lighter! lol

I'd love to see them! I don't know even half as much about 1920s hats as I should, and am always keen to learn more - your posts are always so informative.

Yes please! I'd love to see them. I keep meaning to buy a general history of hats, but unfortunately specialist era titles keep getting priority...a better general knowledge of millinery never goes astray. And I bet they're gorgeous.

I do tend to go after reasonably high end items - I'd rather save up and get an excellent item than several of lesser quality...mainly because I just don't have the space to store and conserve them all properly. Because I collect an older era, they're mostly not suitable for daily wear, so I have to maintain my regular wardrobe as well. I have a set budget for the collection, and any money I don't spent in one paycheck gets rolled over into the next to increase the vintage funds pool. I do keep a keen eye out for bargains, though, and a lot of the items are just excellent luck...often items that were poorly described or photographed. That cloche went for under $40. I've sometimes spent what looks like a lot of money on eBay items, but that's usually because I know what they go for retail.

We're currently discussing what to do with the split...it seems stable and is unnoticeable, but my mother - much more talented at these things than me - is looking at backing it, perhaps with some grossgrain ribbon.

Thank you so much! Me in an earlier time - many years younger and lighter! lol
It's gorgeous...do you have any close ups of the dress?

I would love to see your pre 1920s hats too, Bettie. I'm eagerly following this thread, love your hats.
Especially intrigued by your 1920's Merrimac Savoy Fur Velour Vintage Hat, I didn't know hats like that were worn in the 20's.

I saw the funniest hat today. It was from the late 50's, early 60's, I believe, and it was a bubble-shape hat embellished with white feathers all over. And guess what - the feathers were permed! They were shaped into lovely little curls, to the point where they resembled hair. It wasn't very flattering, in my opinion, or not on me anyway, but quite fun none the less!

I also bought two hats and got a third one for free. The free one is a 30's straw hat with guinea fowl feathers The two other hats are a 40's green felt hat from and a 50's beret in fur velvet. I shall post pictures as soon as I have done my hair in pin curls so it complements the hats.

I love the soft green of that hat, Laura - it's so absolutely perfect with your colouring. Such a nice shape, too.

Thanks ladies, the color was really what I fell for too. About the shape, it's a soft hat so the shape can come to look pretty sloppy if I'm not careful, so I need to practice on how to shape it nicely, kinda like the gents can do with their fedoras, so I think I'll be peeping a bit in some of their threads on that topic.

If some of you ladies have good ideas on how to shape these kinds of hats, please do tell me. :)

Pretty hats! I think I like the straw one the best. Are they pheasant feathers?
Straw hats somehow seem more wearable to me, in terms of strangers giving you funny looks, maybe because more and more people want to avoid sunlight and wear hats for that reason? [huh]
