Merritt Cravats, blue polka dots, late 1930s.

I've got almost exactly the same tie, altough that mine is from the mid-40s. May i ask how long your tie is? Considering it's from the late 30s, i guess it's a little bit shorter than mine. I think it works well with dark-blue suits, and any shade of grey.

Both astonishingly poor ways to date ties, IMO. 30s ties are all over the place in length, with 47" by no means outside the norm, in my experience. I guess it could be early 40s, but not later.

Baron, are you certain that it's late-'30s? Based on its length, and perhaps its lining, it looks like it might be later.

Liking all those TT, I saw a couple of good ones similar-ish last week at a local charity shop but had no cash on me...I'll have to go tomorrow and see if they are still there...no tags or boxes though!

I understand that variations exist within the norm, Baron, but when you put 47" and lined together, it leans toward the possibility of a later time period. Of course, you actually possess the tie for viewing, and therefore are better able to ascertain its age.

Pilgrim had some great ties, the leaf-patterned ones included. I've got quite a few of the leaf ones; they were quite popular, it seems.

See, I don't agree. I'd say at least 60% of my 1930s ties are lined (the exception being brocades and wool ties for some reason). Most of my NRA labelled ties are lined. Probably 80-90% of my 1920s ties are lined. (These numbers are of course estimates: I haven't actually counted, at least not recently.)

This is especially true of fine satins and crepes - silk was very cheap (especially lower grade liner silk), and it would be much cheaper and less time consuming to silk tip and machine stitch the ends of the tie, rather than hand roll the edges. The analogous situation is the proliferation of zippers in the fly of trousers. Sure the zipper cost more than 6 buttons did, but the savings in installation time and lack of buttonholes to be stitched far outweighed the cost of the zipper for RTW manufacturers.

Such "silk tipping" of ties was a huge "scandal" of the day (in quotation marks as it was really a "scandal" invented by Apparel Arts and the menswear advertising bods to try to get people - particularly wives and mothers - to buy more expensive ties that were fully lined).

I currently own few true vintage ties. I do own a few ties that are old, considered "vintage" to the maker trade mark, Versace, that are maybe 20 years old, but all the old vintage I have had are gone, except for two plaid ties from Scotland. For reasons I just do not understand why...I have sold all my vintage ties...so now I am in the market for a few!

I just bought a lot of vintage ties at a rummage sale for a steal. Vintage women's clothes I can date with ease, but these ties puzzle me just a bit more.

I would say the far left is 1950s. The rest, I'm thinking 1930s.

I have pretty much zero use for these - the only thing I could do with them besides keep them around until I find a use for them is to donate them to the theatre department I worked for. However, I'm thinking I'm going to sell them to fund some other purchases. I'd be up for offers...they'll be in the classifieds section at some point here or on Etsy.

Yes, you are certainly right about there being pre-'40s ties which are silk-tipped or fully lined. As I mentioned, though, when I see a tie which is fully-lined or tipped and 47" long, I tend to think that it is post-'30s, since the majority '30s ties that I have seen are under 47". Also to be taken into consideration is material, width, (sometimes) design, and manufacturer's label, etc. Yet, as I previously wrote, you have the actual tie in your possession, and would therefore be able to judge better than I. (And I find it interesting that NRA ties would be lined or tipped.)

I have a few NRA ties that are self tipped (the tie fabric cut too long and folded back to form the tipping), as well, which is super weird. It's a feature I had always associated with the 1960s, until I found a big bag of them, obviously very old, and several with NRA labels.

(And I find it interesting that NRA ties would be lined or tipped.)
