I'm assuming that flashy British ties were unusual though? From what I've seen it appears that stripes or subtle geometric patterns were the norm over here whilst the Americans were a lot more creative with their choice of patterns and colours.

Always being very careful to accept that we're talking about what has survived, and not what was available, my general impression is the same as yours: that British necktie design/style/pattern was rather more reserved than that of American manufacturers.

Having said that, the tie my grandfather wears in pictures in the early 1950s, after demobbing, is a strikingly wild design. I only have b&w pictures but it looks very like the woven "brocade" designs of many 1930s American ties. It was almost certainly the only tie he owned, having no need for them in his day-to-day life, so it was probably the tie he was given on demobbing.

I instructed my girlfriend to buy me this today. The shop owner said it's late 40s but the width and length (nearly 56 inches) make me wonder. Any opinions?

The length knocks it out of the 40s. Probably a decade later. It looks in the style of Widebrim's recent ties.

That's what I thought too. Late 50s possibly? The pattern and construction doesn't quite seem 60s to me.

Not necessarily a tie but an uncut sheet of raxon pinup tie tips. Framed it should make a nice addition to the bar.

Depends on the width, too, but mid -'50s is a safe guess.

Haven't looked in here for a while, now this is a tie I love. I collect this type of handpainted tie. They are awesome, this one is very very nice.

Man, is that a hot tie. Partly airbrushed for sure. (And you know that it was done in California...)

No way is it late 40s, Alan. The width and length of it, and the way the ends are finished, given that it's a British tie, put it into the very late 50s or early 60s.
