Take a strong cardboard and cut out the shape of the tie. Then put it in the tie. This should prevent flat edges and also the seams from the other side making a mark on the front.

Also use a cotton cloth between the iron and the silk and use low temperature.

Yes, absolutely have something between the iron and the fabric. Depending on what the ties are made of, not doing so is a sure recipe for "shine".

My best success has been using a damn cloth between the iron and the fabric. This allows a doubling up of steam to make the fibres more responsive and heat to force the tie into its proper shape.

If they are very wrinkled and twisted, often the only remedy is to take the tie apart, iron out the liner, and sew it back together again. It's quite an easy job, but can take some time. I've saved an awful lot of ties this way.

Good luck!

Thank you both very much! The cardboard trick is a great idea, exactly what I needed! Good tip on putting a cloth between the tie and iron too, I'd hate to ruin them. Will be good to get these sorted out so I can actually wear them! :D

While I'm here, a favourite of mine that's seen a lot of use this Autumn:

Coronation of 53- it’s peppered with moth holes but I just had to have it! Also excuse the cringe-worthy creases.
Hmmm, I wonder if it was ever worn willingly by the previous owner…

Nice one JP.

I just got 3 of those square ended 50s numbers in amongst a lot of good ones. Two have Ford (I think; I ain't a driver) motorcars - one with old models and the other with contemporary 50s models - and the other has some great novelty fabric-type farm equipment drawings. That one I desperately wish I could find a shirt in the fabric. I'll get some pics and post here.

Never been much for ties, until I recently learned to tie a bow tie and now I have the fever. I want to wear them with my t shirts even, When I figure out about posting pictures, I will pop some up.
