I hit all the thrift stores today, but came back with only artwork. I have absolutely NO room in my apartment for any more art, yet I keep buying it.:eusa_doh:

Hey, for free, who could complain right?

Actually, that's what I was thinking. . And they said they were probably going to get rid of a third one in "rough shape". Would I be interested in that too? I said if I didn't want it, I knew plenty of people who did, so yes please!

I also purchased a 1940's feathered hat yesterday too. I priced it very fairly a month ago, and patiently waited for someone to buy it. But when it went on sale for half off yesterday, I said "forget it!". All bets are off. That hat is MINE. So much for not trying to bring another hat home....
And we won't even mention the $1.25 volunteer discount I got!

Here is the 500C that I found in a pawn shop. I got it out of repair on my way to work, yesterday, and spent every free moment wondering if I should call the camera shop to ask if I was doing something wrong, because it only worked with the film back removed.

At the end of the day, I brought it home and showed it to my brother. At one point he asked if it did double exposures. So as an experiment I turned the film winding crank of the film back (not the large crank) backward and the frame counter reset. Now it works perfectly.

I'm glad I didn't call the shop. lol

From the little bit of research I've done, I know that it was made in either 1963, '64 or '65. As you can see, it has a few nicks and dings - the ones on the lens shade are the worst - but it's solid and sounds great, and everything moves smoothly. I know I'm going to enjoy using it.

for lamps! Here are two of my newest boyfriends! I found them at an estate sale today. Paid 40 bucks each for them.

These lamps are beautiful, what a great find. I really love your flamingos too!

Scored a pair of black dress pants from a local thrift shop. The pants are very old, possibly 20s-30s? No belt loops, button fly and suspender buttons that are metal rivets and not buttons. The rivets are stamped Brokaw Bros.

Button fly (metal rivets) with a clasp at the top also marked Brokaw Bros.

The inside waistband has two clips inscribed, "The Hand E Catch".

Those look like late 1920's early 1930's to me. I could tell you more if I could see the entire image of the pants from top to bottom.

However, my husband had a reproduction pair made from the 1930's that look almost exactly like that with all the details.

Well, these are newer mannequins, not old, and have a couple minor problems. But I have no complaints.

Very cool about the garage sale and don't forget to share pics!

I always like to chat with people if they don't mind. Somehow, my purchases seem to mean more if I can bring something about the family home with me.

I went back to the garage sale late yesterday afternoon to pick-up the cases and ended up buying two boxes of seventeen custom picture frames for $16.00. Then I took them to Dutch Art Gallery and spent an hour deciding what to use in the frames. Some I'll keep but most will go for Birthday and Christmas gifts. All told, I spent about $210.00 for the frames, art, glass, acid-free foam board, and frame=back sealing. Not bad.

Josephine and Starius, Those old stemer trunks can be very bice. They are also useful. I bought one several years ago that is now a closet for my daughter's American Girl dolls.

MNC, That's a beautiful camera. Will we see photos at some time in the future?

QB, Nice artwork. I have the same problem with too much art and too little wall here at home.

SarahLouise, Those are wonderful lamps. Congratualations.

Feraud, Nice pants. It looks like they have a split waistband in back as well. Will we see pictures of them in action?

The last auction I went to had several old chests and trunks too. I actually went out of my way to get one that was in rougher shape.... why? Because hidden inside which no one else knew about was a bunch of hats!
The hats ended up not being the greatest, but I just had to gamble, you know?

In any event, I'm currently restoring the chest into a nicer presentable condition. I only put $10 into it, so I figure I did okay either way.

Van Dykes' Restorers (they're online and have a print catalog) has lot's of resotration items for old trunks like handles and leather straps, etc. It's worth checking out if you are finishing an old trunk.

I got an old steamer trunk from the 40s at a flea market this summer for $5.00. They seller didn't want to carry it home (he had originally priced it $20). The trunk is dark blue with white trim & has all of it's hangers inside. Plus, I got a bonus. In one of the drawers inside was a men's dress scarf from the 40s. One side of the scarf is silk and the other side is cashmere. It's so soft and was worth the $5 alone!

Actually, yes, we will soon see pictures taken with it. And I have an idea that's been rattling around my tiny brain all weekend. . . . In fact, I'll make it official right here: To help me get to know my camera, I'm going to offer a free photo shoot to any person or couple in the Los Angeles area. Two rolls of film - one color, one black and white, twelve exposures each.

I'll post my offer, with details, in the Classifieds forum late on Friday night, November 2. But I'll need a way to decide who gets the photo shoot. Perhaps a contest, a-la Vintage Betty?

May I present my new Gonder vase!

I don't think the thrift store knew what they had, neither did I until I flipped it over after I got it home. I found an identical one online for fifty dollars which is about four times what I paid.

Now I must find something wonderful to go in it.

Last weekend we found a 100 year old postcard album at a yard sale in the Berkeley Hills. Not great condition. Pencilled dedication inside reading two names and "1910." Price: 2 bucks.

I found this great glass reverse-paint art deco frame at the Goodwill today for $2. It measures a good 10 x 12. I have a pretty good collection of frames like this, but this one was particularly nice. That's a photo of my mom when she was 18 (1957, I think).
