^^ pocket seams - that's one of those vintage myths I've never heard before. Clearly wrong.

Here's an American suit. no labels of any kind, it probably dates to the late 30s-middle 40s (and probably the latter end of that timescale). Awesome fabric with vibrant blue overcheck and red, blue and emerald green flocked stripes. It's about a size 36L, and I'll be putting it into classifieds tomorrow. More pics here.

How strong is the shoulder padding and, when worn, are they sloped down or more horizontal?

The shoulders are not heavily padded, though they do not slope a lot.

Now that I have it pressed out I'm wondering about the fit. It fits perfectly in the arms, shoulders, and length, but the waist is rather baggy, probably for a man my height but significantly more weight around the middle. Maybe I was too excited about finding one that I didn't notice when I tried it on. I'm going to have a think, and may end up selling it. I found one, I may find another, and failing that I have fabric to make one.

I'd say another hint towards late 20's - early 30's, together with the button stance.

If it is not extremely wide at the waist, why not just take it in at the side and back seams?
A little exercise for someone who could make a jacket from scratch.
The restitching of the liner, wouldn't be too obvious with this black fabric.

Nick, does it flare out from waist to hips. I find this with a lot of 20s and older Euro (though not British) jackets. They fit me fine until the waist, then they flare out and look dumb.

It flares out, but again not a lot. Here's a couple (poor) photos of it on, though without a waistcoat. I just put it on over what I was wearing.

It may be a possibility, but sometimes it's more trouble than it's worth. I have a lot of projects ongoing at the moment, not to mention work and school, so it would just be one more. If it seems like it's just a bit that needs to come in at the sides, I'll probably keep it.

Wow, same fabric as on my suit, I would say that trousers has similar, if not same pattern. Great!

On the subject of overcoats, I bought this one and will be picking it up tomorrow morning. I'm very excited :D I've wanted it for some time.

Wow I really like the style of that coat, I picked up a grey one about two weeks ago to round out my color
selection of overcoats.
It is amazing how many really good ,heavy vintage overcoats are out there ,you just have to know where to
look.

Wow you gotta love the width of the lapel on that suit , when I look at one of those "new " skinny suits
compared to that I want to puke ,that suit scream class !

tbh, lapels this wide start to look a bit silly on very small suits like this one. An 18 inch or so chest width and 17 inch shoulders just can't pull it off.:eusa_doh: Unfortunate, but I've found this with an awful lot of vintage styles.

Hello All , This is a linen suit that is very comfortable to wear .
The inside label states " Barrington" and there is a town close to me with that name so I think it was made local, by say a
department store back in the day before the big box stores took over like J.A.B.
