1940's. Nice suedes.

In the 50s the suede moved up and over the vamp half way.

Yep. Thin sole, high heel, square toe, eyelets, thick laces.

great catch, as always! I was focused on a single detail and ignored the overall style.

My first pair of Church's

I'm assuming it is seal as it says "Fighting Seal" on the inside

The shoes cost $7.99 at the thrift store, and I paid an extra $4 for brand new AE shoe trees

This no flash picture shows the color and texture of the leather better.

All round good buy = Churchs. Round 1960s I'd say with that design and of course made of seal which won't happen again.

Those actually look like elephant to me. I have a pair of elephant boots made by the old Palace boot shop. Those are identical in texture to mine.

elephant and seal can appear similar. The above pair are the Church's sealskin (although there are other textures of seal. Church's had a run where they made shoes from ANYTHING that moved & breathed.

When you mentioned "Church's had a run where they made shoes from ANYTHING that moved & breathed" I thought there was a definite time period for this...

Wonderful 40s with the swan neck detailing aound the throat. Love to see the soles. Look like mild spades. Of course you can find similar designs today - almost!
