I recently visited an antique store in a sizable country town (pop >30 000), and was surprised by the proprietor's stock, which included FIVE pairs of genuine 1920s shoes, all of which were NEVER WORN (i.e., no scuff marks on soles), but obtained via deceased estates.

They weren't my size and ironically, the crocodile/snake leather looked the worse for wear compared to the rest of the shoe, but I was impressed at their price (<AU$80/pair), condition and style.

Lesson leant = a 10 to 15 minute scout-about in small town shops that you happen to pass through (particularly in retirement-prone areas) is worth your while.

Got some of my favorite vintage patterns from one last year, and a great pair of 40's green croc platforms that I ended up selling for double what I picked em up for. Too bad they weren't my size! But they went to the wardrobe of General Hospital, so my little shoes had their moment of fame

The two orange dresses are just stunning in person, but unfortunately, the silk chiffon is not long for this world. I'm hoping Miss Lauren will help me take patterns off of them so I can whip up copies. The black dress has come apart at 3 seams, but I am planning to open up the two front seams and insert 2 narrow black satin gores in the front, and patch up the torn seams.

I did fairly well today. I won two lengths of 1940's rayon fabric on ebay (yay for esnipe. )

While esnipe was bidding for me, I was at the Alameda Flea market where I got a 1944/45 Montgomery Wards Catalogue for $20 and a Mid-1940's knee length persian lamb coat for $30!!! The funniest thing is that it is almost exactly like the persian lamb coat on the cover of the catalogue I had just bought.

Okay...now back to watching San Francisco in the 30's on PBS.

My addiction as well. How did your car purchase go. My dad has bought a few off ebay, and he thinks it's better than going to a dealership, and totally guaranteed.
By the way, I love the plaid jacket. It is very Katherine Hepburn style, it looks great. The blue sweater is nice too. I wish I had more stores to go to in my area, but we really do not. I'm planning a trip to the Salvation Army store, it's on the other side of Boston, so I'm hoping it will be worth it. We have another store in the Cambridge area, but there collections tend to be in pretty poor condition. I usually leave there disappointed. I know of a few stores about an hour from here, I'm going to try to get to them. I hear that they are owned by people who do not like the internet, and there prices reflect that, so hopefully it will be worth getting the car out of the garage, and spending the gas money to get there.

Daisy, never underestimate the power of a good thrift store . You RARELY find pre-50's stuff, but I've found found some great 50's dresses and the like. Especailly the little wiggle dresses or beaded sweaters. There are gems to be had with some good digging! And you can find out when they get their shipments in and go that day to dig up some great deals.

I'm not positive yet. Each is about 3 1/2 yards, so I would have plenty for dresses. I'm kind of thinking maybe a front button blouse for the grey flowered one though with big billowy cuffed sleeves. I'll have to get out my patterns tonight and make some decisions. Maybe this long sleeved one:
