yesterday, I won the ebay-auction on this beautiful black dress from the 40s. It has exactily my measurements (which is very unusual), so I'm sure it will fit perfectly I hope it will arrive soon, because sometimes the shipping to europe takes very long.

I found this peach of a late '30s/'40s hostess gown for $6. Just when I was starting to think the thrift stores had run dry...

The label is "G. Fox and Co.". It feels silky, but I think it's a synthetic... nylon?

I think this may be made of a rayon satin (I have a few 30s-40s dressing gowns and nightgowns....one of them has a "100% rayon" label in it and it has the same satin finish on the outside of the fabric and flat woven underside? Then again, it could be "parachute silk" (nylon), but (correct me if I'm completely wrong here), it seems to my nylon fabrics were not available until post WWII, which would make this a later garment than I believe it is (http://www.nyfashioncenterfabrics.com/nylon-fabric-info.html. Ah, yes, now I recall: both Jonathan Walford, author of Forties Fashion, and the Vintage Fashion Guild's site, confirm that: "Nylon was the first true synthetic developed by DuPont in the 1938, available to the American public in May 1940, used in stockings. Not used in clothing until well after WWII." In either case, SWOON!

Thank you so much for the info, Baroness!! I'll confess, identifying vintage synthetics is a skill I've yet to master. It does feel very satiny on the outside (when I first picked it up, I thought it might be silk) but is a matte weave on the inside, and hardly looks to be post-WWII... so it probably is rayon satin!
