Jake Gittes Type Shoes

I got these Nunn Bush specs on a make me an offer and bid high at USD 75 when there were no other offers subsequently.[huh] Then was very pleasantly surprised at the wonderful shoes that appeared later.

I changed the laces to brown for better effect later as the white laces showed too much white on the vamp.

Today's Purchases

I went for my daily walk and decided to stop at the Daiso by the train station. I've been going more often because lately they seem to be carrying fairly high quality dress items for only 100 yen a piece. There was a time that the material they used was an awful coarse polyester that was barely better than that used for party tablecloths. Lately though, they've taken to using some kind of extremely fine material that feels like decent quality silk.

Anyway, along with the six ties I purchased two pocket squares and two sets of covered button kits for a grand total of 1000 yen (around $10 USD).

You may think it's odd that they would sell office/dress items in what essentially is a "$1 store." Nevertheless, Japanese society being what it is there are a lot of people who shop at these stores on a daily basis for all their needs (food, clothing, toiletries, etc.) so the quality is much different than one may expect. However, in general nearly every sector of employment that involves office work requires men to wear a suit in Japan so it creates an environment apparently similar to that of England of the 1960's where nearly every man is wearing a suit to work - even if they end up doing garden work outside or cleaning the office all day (typical activities for new hires in Japan). Because of this one can find business/formal wear items for sale in very odd places (such as linen handkerchiefs and black or white ties in 7-11) and usually on a sliding scale of cost depending on where you go.

The little woman and I went out antiquing today, even though I'm trying to get over pnemonia!! Yeah I'm completely bats!
Well, anyway, we made out very well, spent only a little bit of money and came out pretty well!

I picked up three great hats! That and a few other trinkets,...ANOTHER present for my wife, and one for my Mother.

A very old Bowler, made in America, looks to possibly date back the the 1920s or earlier! Just my size, so even though it needs its leather band restiched, the outer ribbon replaced, along with the edge ribbon, has an area that looks to have been bumped, so its got a mild bump inthe crown, needs to be blocked to fix I'd suppose,..(right??, school me if I'm wrong!!)for $23 bucks you couldn't pass on it! Besides, I've never found an old bowler sized 7 3/8 !!!
**(Take a look at the VERY old tag inside that resided under the leather band!!)

Second, is a nice light brown straw boater hat with chocolate brown ribbon, (1920s I presume?) again just my size at 7 3/8,....needs a completely NEW leather band and some little work to repair the bow on the side on the ribbon,..its frayed a bit. $12 bucks, can't beat it!

Third is a great old grey with black ribbon Dobbs fedora with its box. $25 clams, once again,
7 3/8,....good things come in three's!
Needs only a new ribbon and some minor cleaning,...if yer picky.

Vintage Hamilton wristwatch,...needs new crystal, BUT keeps time, hands are there and its pretty clean,....did I mention its a HAMILTON!!!
(I'll have to look it up but I beleive its from around the 1940s, maybe early 50s,....if you have a definitive answer on this I'd like to hear)

Woman's Gruen watch, gold filled, needs new crystal, all hands there and it runs, keeps time. This one's for Mom! (I'm thinking 1930s?...gotta check though)

Last but not least, since I love old men's hair care products like pomades from the 40s and earlier, I had to pick this up. Never saw it, and yes, I'm bound to try it out at least once!! Its Called "Lan-Z-Oil" with lanolin, and other ingredients I can't recall right now. Reads, "For men,..For women"

Oh I almost forgot!!!...

I passed up a really old (1907 dated) tuxedo! I am a 42 jacket, this "JUST" fit on me,...I could not do much after that, so I took it off,....I actually tried it on to get a better idea of its size.
It has its jacket, vest and pants,....all in great condition and without any moth holes I could find! They only wanted $40 for it, so if there's anyone out there that might like to see it, let me know, I'll take a few photos when I get up there if theres interest in it. (just have to be sneaky, they'll think I'm gonna list it on ebay or soemthing!! )

I'd say its safe to guess a size 38, MAYBE 40 would fit wel linto this tux,....it really needs to be bought and worn!!!

...which is exactly why I want to get one of these!

Did Liberty have a lot of stock left? I might pop in, though I'm sure Oxford Circus is even worse than usual at this time of year!

i don't think there are any of that style left. they have some similar in off-white. they also do a collarless shirt. various jackets and trousers and knitwear too difficult to describe.

Thrift store find. Pre-1955 UGWA label (before AFL merged with CIO).

3-button suit. The lapel covers the top button.

Note the proximity of the 2 belt loops on the left:

For you button/pocket fans. The button on the jacket pockets are there just for show (the pockets are double-besomed). Note - the jacket appears lighter because the picture was taken in direct sunlight.

Talon zipper. Although its not visible, "Talon" is written at an angle (think American regimental tie).

I took the liberty (badum! ching!) of emailing Liberty to ask more about this label. Reply reproduced below:
